Second visit to the Leica Welt in Wetzlar – this time with the factory tour I missed back in May (bad timing again: Friday afternoon, most of the floor already empty for the weekend). The real highlight was the Wenders exhibition – Donata and Wim’s very different ways of seeing the same world, shown side by side. Also caught up with two former workshop guests over coffee at Café Leitz, and brought my wife and our Dalmatian along this time. New post on the blog – link in first comment.

I hadn't planned this shot. The plane had just landed, and I shot it through the airfield fence — participants from my second January workshop were on board. The flat light left almost no shadow to define it. Shot at 100mm on the XCD 35-100E, X2D II, 1/500 sec at f/4, ISO 160. I left a lot of empty sky above it, more than I'd normally frame, because that empty space is doing most of the work in the picture.

Low morning light, just enough color in the sky to separate it from the ice below. I shot this at 100mm on the XCD 35-100E, which let me isolate the red boat small in the frame without it pulling focus from the bay itself. X2D II, 1/30 sec at f/5.6, ISO 50.

The water was still enough that the boat's reflection barely broke apart. I used 100mm on the XCD 35-100E to compress the distance between boat and mountains, so the whole scene reads flatter and closer together than it actually was. X2D II, 1/15 sec at f/8, ISO 50.

A lighthouse, a fjord refelection, Hamnøy. Just three random spots you can find and photograph at Lofoten. My preferred travel time is winter by the way, because this is when mood and light are one of a kind, and it is also less crowded. Have you been to Lofoten in winter?

One beach, similar composition: The waves at Unstad invite you to experiment. The flow of the water is unpredictable, but if you take your time and observe, you will start recognizing patterns. Have you been to Lofoten in winter?
