Interrupting my self-imposed sabbatical to share some recent photos I took for another photographer here in Germany 🇩🇪😊

She and I exchanged sessions in a gorgeous apple orchard and these are a few of my favorites😍

So no, I’m not currently taking clients, but yes, I still very much love documenting families😊

Here's a glimpse of my 7-year-old's very first swim meet in Germany!

Last weekend I had the honor of volunteering my time to photograph KJ's team, the Kaiserslautern Kingfish.

From butterfly to backstroke, breastroke to freestyle, there were 44 events in total, lasting from 8am-2pm on Saturday, September 17th at Ramstein Aquatic Center.

Fortunately I had a front row seat (or rather, squat-- I never sat down😅) in documenting my favorite swimmer-- and I also captured dozens of images of his teammates as well.

Needless to say, it felt so good to be back behind the camera again!☺️

Quite certainly one of the most surreal moments of my life, standing atop this 4th century mountain fortress, witnessing the sun emerge from the hazy horizon, a steamy fog billowing from below.

As the wind whipped our exposed faces and froze our fingers, we caught a rare sight of one of the most untouched territories of the Korean Peninsula-- the 38th parallel.

There we stood, overlooking layers of mountains, stretches of forests and a long, winding river--- just minutes from the “world's most dangerous border," the DMZ, where North and South Korea split.

My friend's husband is the commander there, first in charge of the American troops who defend South Korea.

For the past 17 months her family has lived apart-- she and the kids in Seoul, while he's on post at Camp Bonifas.

During the week, she takes care of the kids while he stands guard at the JSA.

On the weekends, they reunite.

It's been months of separation, uncertainty and sacrifice and yet as I photographed them, all I could feel was the wisdom, strength and gratitude they’ve gained through this experience.

When they're all together, it's as though nothing else matters. They hug, they laugh, they play. They embrace one another tenderly and when their challenges seem insurmountable, they close their eyes, remembering who they are and what they stand for.

They're a military family with unparalleled patriotism. They love their country and fly the American flag with utmost pride.

And by taking the time to cultivate meaningful relationships with their Korean counterparts, they've grown to love South Korea, too.

They recognize the importance of this mission and wholeheartedly support their soldier’s calling to serve.

Until this day, I’d never once seen the sunrise in this seemingly peaceful place.

With a vastly different world beyond the border coupled with a war that never really ended, families like hers will continue to come here to serve— in hopes of protecting our allies and preserving their freedom.

Meanwhile, we can step back, admiring the beauty of their bond—fortified by the steadfast love they share for each other— and this land we all currently call home.

It's no secret I was beyond overwhelmed when we first moved to South Korea-- between a brand new baby and my two older boys having a difficult time adjusting to a new home and new school in a new country, as well as pandemic restrictions--I knew in my heart I needed to take a break from my business and focus all my energy on my family.

During that time, a fellow military wife reached out to me, asking for a mentorship and a family photo session. I declined but let her know I’d be taking clients the following year.

Fortunately she patiently waited, followed up and booked her session… then let me know I’d be the first professional photographer to document her family (besides herself!). The pressure was on!

Once we began planning, I immediately realized we had so much in common (both 35, military wives, etc). In her client questionnaire she mentioned she loved exploring the outdoors. Which gave me an idea— what if we could travel together to shoot at Seoraksan National Park?! I knew she shared my love for untouched nature and epic landscapes and this had been a South Korea bucket list item of mine so I asked.

And she said YES! I was so excited!

Since I was already bringing my family on the trip, I then asked her if she’d be interested in photographing MY family and she agreed!

For weeks we planned and coordinated outfits, booked AirBnBs, and spent hours talking over the phone. I shared some of my tips and strategies for planning/styling/shooting family sessions and also my story of how/why my work/style evolved throughout the years (thanks to some very amazing mentors of mine).

Finally, the long-awaited weekend arrived and we fled the city life for Sokcho!

Together we scouted the park, finding pockets of gorgeous golden light, branches filled with burnt orange leaves and a bubbling brook hidden inside the forest.

It was so nice sharing these moments with someone who truly appreciated the scenery, the sunlight and all things photo-related. Someone who shared similar dreams as mine.

That afternoon her family showed up to their session looking absolutely BEAUTIFUL! They plucked wildflowers, danced in the sunshine, splashed in the stream and cuddled close as the sun set behind the mountains.

So many tender moments and so much love between Padao, her husband and children.

I’m humbled to have had the opportunity to document their family in such a stunning location. And honored to call her my friend.

A family near and dear to my heart is celebrating one of THE most venerated milestones in a military career-- the promotion of their officer to COLONEL (that's one step away from general for all you civilians out there). Congratulations on this well-deserved achievement and thank you for the opportunity to document the ceremony.

If we’re being completely honest here, anyone who knows me well can tell you I’m NOT a city girl.

Drop me on the sandy shores of a sundrenched coast, whisk me away to a lush verdant forest or perch me on the peak of a majestic mountain... anywhere but the concrete jungle, please🙏🏼

But I’ve found, in every city—if you look hard enough—you can find a tranquil, natural refuge, free from taxis, skyscrapers and hoards of bodies— especially if you’re there before the sun rises😉

In Seoul, one of those places is the National Museum of Korea / Yongsan Family Park.

Here you have spectacular views of Namsan Tower, glistening ponds, cascading waterfalls, stone paths, a bamboo forest and so many flowers! Easily, one of the most peaceful spots in all of Seoul.

It was so fun exploring this park with this lovely family, documenting their love for one another. This is where their family grew, their baby was born and where countless memories were made. This was an assignment unlike any other— and now it’s coming to an end.

Ciara, thank you for trusting me to capture one of your final mornings here in Korea. Wishing you all the best at your next duty station♥️

Oh, and P.S.-- I'll never forget driving up an 80 degree roadway to park at your mountainside villa. Easily my scariest moment driving EVER. Thank you for that😂
