10-03-2023 | Day 7

Today, we’re starting very early and will be picked up at 6:30 AM to head to the Canyon de los Perdidos. After a two-hour drive and a coffee stop, we arrive in the middle of nowhere. No people, just desert and a large canyon. Along with 10 other tourists, we make our way down into the canyon and hike all the way to its interior. Millions of years ago, this used to be an ocean—quite impressive! We finish our tour with a round of foosball and a wine tasting from a local wine producer from Pisco. In the evening, we try out Peru’s night bus for the first time, and so far, it’s not bad at all.

10-02-2023 | Day 6

Today, we decided to visit the neighboring town of Paracas and explore the national park. Since we are traveling by bus and the connections are limited, we opted for a boat tour to observe sea lions, penguins, and flying seabirds. The first picture shows geoglyph carved into a desert landscape. This geoglyph is known as the Paracas Candelabra or Candelabra of the Andes, a large-scale ancient design etched into the northern face of the Paracas Peninsula in Peru.

10-01-2023 | Day 5

It’s not much fun, but we start the day with route planning and organization. Many activities have to be booked weeks, sometimes even months in advance. We’re realizing we’re a bit late, but we still want to do the five-day Salkantay Trek. Whether that will work out is still uncertain. In the afternoon, we head to the desert towards the Huacachina oasis and explore the area by dune buggy and on foot. The location is a first highlight after the city’s smog.

09-30-2023 | Day 4

The day starts with a hearty breakfast. Wilson prepares fresh papaya-pineapple juice, fried eggs, and warmed bread rolls. We leave the city by bus and arrive in Ica 3.5 hours later. There’s quite a bit of traffic, but street vendors weave between the waiting cars, offering everything from feather dusters to phone gadgets. We drop off our luggage in the room and take a quick walk around the city. However, aside from dusty streets, poor air quality, and hundreds of tuk-tuks, there isn’t much to see. We end the day with Lomo Saltado and Pallares Secos as a late-night snack.

09-28-2023 / Day 3

We head to our next accommodation in the heart of Lima, where we meet Carlos and Miguel. During our conversation, we realize how bad our Spanish really is. Still, we continue practicing with our Uber driver, Walter Hugo, for over an hour. We meet our 76-year-old host, Wilson, cook spaghetti with him, and finish the meal with a typical Peruvian coffee. He tells us about his large family, with 11 siblings and 8 children. Later, we explore the city. The former president is currently in prison, and over 60 people have died in recent protests, so there is a strong police presence. At the promenade, we witness a police motorcycle chase and end the day with a short walk by the sea.

We arrive in Lima on time and somewhat exhausted at 5:00 am. Our luggage has also made it and we make our way to the simple accommodation we booked beforehand.
