Let me make this clear: I’m guilty of all of these and this is only to give you a better understanding of why we do the things we do.
So, here we go:
1. The majority of wedding photographera use AI to edit images. Services like help us deliver galleries in days instead of weeks. Yet, I’ll still tell you it takes up to 10 weeks. That doesn’t mean, I’m lying to you. Sometimes I need distance to keep my edits consistent and unbiased. And while Aftershoot provides the base, I still adjust each photo individually.
2. Postponing your gallery even if it’s ready. Why? Because I love when couples give me a strong emotional reaction. So, if your gallery is ready a week after the wedding, I might hold it back for another week, just to put a bit more time distance between the wedding day and the delivery.
3. Fake it till you make it. This is a very controversial topic in our industry. A lot of photographers fill their portfolios with styled shoots without labeling them, especially in their early stages. Or they act overconfident even if they’re not sure what to do. I’ve done this in the past. But I‘d never lie to clients, even though it might lose me a job.
4. We constantly renew our websites and branding. Most businesses set their site up once and forget about it for years. Not us. We always feel the need to change something, often because we compare ourselves endlessly on social media. I’ve redone my website 7 times (!!!) in five years. And the next version is already in the works.
5. Asking for discounts, but hating to be asked for them. Most photographers want to be the premium option and hate when couples ask for budget friendly options. But when shopping for something themselves a lot of photographers will ask for discounts and won’t buy if they don’t get any. I used to be this way and when I finally changed that behaviour it changed my life completely. I stopped asking for discounts and funny enough I’ve never been asked for discounts again.
This is or was all true for me. What surprises you the most?
