The most unreal location – Antarctica. The most complicated planning – everything went off-plan. The most challenging conditions – salty, cold wind and slippery rocks we walked on in rubber boots.
I had originally planned to shoot in completely different locations – on a black volcanic beach with a thin layer of smoke hanging over it in a bay on Deception Island. But the icy, incredibly strong wind blew away all the smoke, exposing the landscape and ruining the whole concept. So we ended up shooting spontaneously.
Often, we had only a few minutes to prepare. We passed by beautiful turquoise icebergs, and I always wanted to capture just a few more shots.
I’ve done a lot of winter shoots in the mountains, so harsh and unusual conditions weren’t new to me. But shooting in Antarctica from a yacht took things to a whole new level – the yacht rocks, sometimes quite a lot. It’s often scary to stand without holding on. I was in a life vest, but the couple I was shooting – weren’t. And the water? -1.5°C. Yes, saltwater freezes below zero. I had five minutes to shoot – after that, the sticky, salty wind would turn my hair into a tangled mess.
I hoped it would be better on land, but choosing a location there was another challenge – if the dress got stained with penguin p**p, it would have to be burn it. And the penguins? They’re everywhere. That’s also why we wore rubber boots.
Flying here is completely beyond the pale. The hardest part is taking off and landing - or rather throwing and catching the drone. The yacht rocks from side to side, it moves forward at least a little bit and rises and falls on the waves. But that’s not all - there are a lot of guy ropes and cables from the masts on the yacht.
Yes, it was Antarctic summer, but not exactly the kind of summer you’d imagine. I was in a down jacket – and that felt just right :)
