appreciation dump - it doesn’t quite sound right yet, but I’m sure you get the meaning

I just love those random little moments and memories that bring colour into your life and felt like they deserved their own post - along with my beautiful family of course 🤍

I know how hard it is to be strong in different scenarios, to listen to your body, to take care of yourself, to not give in to the inner critic and to openly communicate.
All the belief systems, the comparing and conditioning, I know it’s right there, tempting, prodding.

I also know how great it feels everytime you do make that decision that feels inherently good. Decisions that literally make your nervous system relax.

Let me give you an example:

I just got back from travelling for 24 hours, with my body going through some health related issues for several days now. There’s a lot coming up these next few weeks, the to-do list is long, but when I sat down to work on it, I could tell that my body is not up to it.
That’s the thing with creative work, it is ultimately connected to how you feel. Yes I can force it, but will it create the same results? Probably not. So I decided to listen and communicate, which tbh is still new to me.

Instead of forcing myself through my to-do list, I gave people a heads up on the situation and that I’ll have to take a little break to recover before I’ll be able to return to the tasks with renewed strength and energy.

And you know what, those inner narratives of “but you’re not allowed to do that/ you’ll be seen as lazy/ people will judge you” they rarely come true!

Most of the time, people react the way you would if it was the other way around: “Of course, I understand, take your time, health is important.”

That’s the kind of world I want to live in. So in order to support that, it’s important to also do your part in believing in it and acting accordingly, which includes listening to yourself and communicating openly.

Let’s be more compassionate together.

Storytime ✨

I recently had this realisation of how much my work has changed and how little it fits into a norm nowadays.
I had two horse photoshoots pretty much back to back. One of them being the “typical” let’s tack up the horses, go for a ride and take some pretty pictures kinda shoot and the other one a spontaneous “hey let’s visit the horses in the field at twilight and see what happens”.

Looking back, most of my photoshoots would be similar to this first scenerio. Me and the client had expectations and ideas, everything had order and structure (as much as that’s possible with horses). I guess it felt safe or predictable and controlled in a way.

Nowadays I often find myself struggling with these types of photoshoots though. I still take decent pictures, but a lot of the time something feels off. One big important part is missing - taking the animal into consideration.

That’s the big difference to the second scenario, the one that feels more aligned with my current self.
When horses are free in a big space, they get to choose if they want to interact with us or not. It certainly might hinder you from getting this one particular image you’ve been hoping to get, but then again it might not. We can always ask, we’ll just also have to be willing to accept the answer.

I’ve never had a negative experience with this type of photoshoot though. It’s usually full of surprises and it really teaches you to stop and turn inwards. To be patient, to listen and to ask for permission. That way a photoshoot turns into a true collaboration, between horses, human and photographer.

Would you be willing to try anything like it?

Creative exhaustion is very present right now and I see myself avoiding social media because it feels overwhelming, but I wanted to leave these images here with you anyway ✨

I was so happy I got to spend some time with this herd again, my favourite thing being just sitting on the field with them and observing. There’s just something about it that calms you right down. Along with watching the clouds drift through the mountains and hearing the wind blow through the trees, whilst the sun is helping you stay warm.

I hope you’ll get an idea of the feeling by scrolling through this little series 🫶🏼

I used to think I had to make my offer smaller and easier to say yes to. Tbh I’ve believed this for my first 13 years of doing photography. But what I learned, is that this kind of work loses something when it’s rushed or when I don’t acknowledge myself for my art.

It loses depth and honesty as well as the space for something real to unfold. There is so much more to it than just receiving a final gallery and that’s what makes it so exciting in the first place!

So I stopped trying to make it fit into something it’s not and started honoring what it actually is.

I had such great plans for how I was to continue posting regularly whilst travelling, but I’ve had to realise that there are more important things.

Like being present and just enjoying the trip. Spending time with people you barely ever see, because they live on the other side of the planet from you and just leaving the phone aside for once.

Nevertheless I’ve been taking soo many pictures during my time here in Canada, so here’s my attempt at sharing some of them ✨

I’m excited for and proud of everyone choosing this step for themselves!

Empowerment shoots are different. They ask for your presence and for you to be honest with yourself and others. You’ve gotta be willing to leave that comfort zone. That’s also why it’s usually not a quick decision.

It’s something you feel into or that you keep coming back to. It’s something you choose consciously. And if you feel drawn to it, there’s usually a reason for that.

It’s fun to get out and shoot something different sometimes, like the other day when and .kittlaus went surfing and we spent the morning at the beach. ☀️

This kind of experimental photography really sparks my creativity, so I love to have the odd unusual project inbetween 🌊

Obviously I couldn’t help but capture some of the dogs running around, but they’re a great little addition to an authentic beach experience in Tofino
