My favourite photo from Petra, Jordan!
Full disclosure: I was incredibly lucky to get this shot. The treasury is rarely as quiet and tourist free as this photo suggests. The camel walked into shot, sat down, then promptly strolled out of shot again. I had my tripod set up in this position for about 30 minutes waiting for an opportunity to get a clear shot without people in it. My point is, firstly, I don't want to give a false impression of what this place looks like if you choose to visit but also, secondly, that I am so grateful to have gotten so lucky.
Photography is for everyone, even those super successful ones you follow, a game of waiting hours or days and taking hundreds or thousands (yes thousands) of photos at a particular destination only to share a few you are happy with.

Exploring Petra brings you face to face with two things in particular, caves and rock carvings. I guess this photo sums that up. You stand in front of the rock carvings trying to work out how they managed it so many years ago, while also wondering if it's a good idea to go into the darkness and explore the cave.
Petra, as legend tells it, was a vital trade route where vendors would pass through in searing temperatures. So, as you can imagine, they needed refuge from the sun and sometimes places to sleep, so caves were dug into the rock face. My guess? Their incredible rock carvings skills came from this necessity and gradually the more intricate artistic skills came from there.

The Monastery, Petra, Jordan. Not to be mistaken for its younger, and much more famous, sibling the Treasury. The Monastery stands about three times the size of the Treasury (previously posted on my feed for those who missed it!). Why is it lesser known?! Posted less on Instagram? Firstly to get up here it will cost you 800 steps. 800 steps after already hiking around 3 hours through the desert. Whereas the Treasury is around a 30 minute walk from the entrance.
As you climb up, step after step, you will ask those coming down "is it worth it?" and you will be asked the same question many times on your way down!

About half way through the days hike out to the Monastery you can climb up into one of the hundreds, if not thousands, of caves. Only this one is a lot larger than the others. If you look up to the ceiling there is the shape of a phoenix somehow carved in black. As you exit the cave you come across the view you see here. I took some time to take in the views and rest. I set up my tripod and put a long continuous self-timer on in the hope that I might capture something good whilst taking time away from the camera to enjoy the view. It's always a struggle while exploring such amazing landscapes to strike a balance between photography and just enjoying the moment.

I still cannot believe that I'd never even heard of the Isle of Skye until earlier this year. One thing photography has brought me is finding out about amazing places, especially ones on my own country that I would otherwise never even think to go to.
I took A LOT of photos at this spot. Mostly because the weather changed 4 times in 10 minutes. Hailstones turned to snow which turned to sun which turned to fog which turned to rain. Every second it seemed like the scene changed but it just didn't feel 'right'.
There was nothing for scale, no other humans for miles due to the terrible weather. That's when it happened, the sun came from.behind a cloud behind the mountain to the right and lit up the valley away to the left behind the Old Man of Storr. I then noticed two hikers stopped for a drink and to take in the view.

This shot is my submission for the "Impossible Shot" category of the / competition.

If you like this one give it a like and a comment if you have a second. It might just help me win! 🙌

I waited up here for what seemed like an eternity until something of someone would pass through the shot to bring it to life. The elusive classic VW camper with surfboards on top never showed... But this cyclist did which I think completed the mood. My road trip companion was probably getting impatient in the car down below but I'm glad I waited just a little longer to capture this image of human interaction with not only nature but our man made structures too.

This shot is my submission for the 'Humanity' category in the / competition.

Hope you like it! I'm super proud of this one! Give it a like or a comment to help me win 🙌

This shot was taken as far north as you can get in the mainland UK. Duncansby head near John O'Groats. After an incredibly long drive and getting out the car to be met with sidewards freezing cold rain to the face we persevered on. Luckily the weather cleared up and after being underwhelmed by the view of the stacks I climbed a little way out to the edge of the cliff and was greeting with this view. Sometimes it pays to 'go far', and then some, to get your shot.

This shot is my submission to the 'Go Far' category of the / competition.
