On TV, catch Dangerous Coasts tonight at 18:30 CEST, Land of Survivors tomorrow August 18 at 18:30, and Land of Waters on August 19 at 18:30. All three repeat on August 30 starting 11:30.

We heard the eruption was active and 24 hours later, and were standing at the crater rim in Iceland. They stayed through the night, dozing off, waking up, the glowing lava still moving in front of them. Definitely one of the most emotional EUROPE shoots.

Happy World Oceans Day from us! 🐋

This special shot actually took us a lot of patience. In the first season, storms kept us in port. In the second season, we spent three weeks sitting in the harbour watching the weather forecast. When the storms finally passed, we had perfect conditions: mirror-flat water, beautiful sunlight. But no whales in sight.

On the last evening, one showed up but it was already too dark to shoot anything. We packed our things and most of the crew flew home. Just two stayed behind to try one last day.

And then they were finally there: multiple blue whales. Freediving legend Fred Buyle ( ) slipped under the surface for the underwater shots. And above, Florian Fischer ( ) got the iconic dolphins surfing on the whales nose wave.

For EUROPE we headed to a tiny island in North Macedonia called Golem Grad. It’s less than 1sq km but home to more than 5000 dice snakes which have the remarkable ability to swim and stay underwater for up to 15 minutes to hunt fish.

Meet one of Europe’s most unbothered animals. The Olm (Proteus anguinus) lives deep inside the limestone caves of the Alps in complete darkness. Evolution stripped it down to the bare essentials: no eyes, no colour and absolutely no urgency. It navigates by Earth’s magnetic field and hunts by sensing vibrations through its skin. It can go 12 years without eating and still be the apex predator of everything around it, mostly because nothing else dared to show up.
In return it gets to live for over 100 years in its own private underground cathedral of stalactites and stalagmites. Honestly, not the worst deal.
