"Becoming a parent is not only about joy, happiness, love, and fulfillment. It can also trigger anger, despair, exhaustion, fear, and pain, as photographer Janine Bächle demonstrates in her long-term, autobiographical project, Becoming Parents. Bächle documented her pregnancy with an unvarnished lens, breaking taboos by showing unfiltered bodily details and functions. Through her sensitive yet shockingly honest photographs, Bächle documents her everyday family life, the changes in her body, and the emotional spectrum of becoming a parent.

She deliberately sees her project as a realistic counterpoint to the romanticized images in relevant guidebooks and magazines and the perfect self-portrayals on social media. In addition to making care work visible, the book shows the struggle with feelings such as aggression, sadness, and fundamental doubts about parenthood.

By juxtaposing her photographs with diary entries, lab results, and birth records, the narrative oscillates between control and collapse. The result is an indissoluble tension between image, word, and document that captivates viewers and allows them to experience the intensity and vulnerability of becoming a parent."

I only realised recently that I've published a book – my second one with a publishing house. It took a while to sink in. There were many times during the process when I wanted to give up – I'm glad I didn't! Now I'm starting to feel the joy of it, as all the weight falls off my shoulders. What a massive project! How do other artists manage to publish a book every one or two years? 🤯 I guess with more help and by delegating graphic design, text editing, translation, proofreading, etc. It was a lot, but it was also enjoyable to have so much creative freedom – no restrictions from anyone (except financial ones, of course). Very similar to my self-publishing workflow.
I'm so curious to keep hearing what you think of it.

Thank you to everyone who came to my book launch at HALLE 14 ( ) on Saturday, 10 January! Taking part in a conversation and speaking in front of people with a microphone definitely took me out of my comfort zone. In case you missed it: I read poems and journal entries from 'Becoming Parents' and answered questions from Jenny Starick ( ). Then Jenny read an excerpt from the accompanying text, 'In Flux: The Aesthetics of Becoming' written by Joanna Wolfarth ( ). Thank you for the interesting questions, including those from the audience! And thank you to David ( ) for documenting this special moment.

Only one week left to support my publication 'Becoming Parents' through Kickstarter! (Link in bio.) 🔥

'Becoming Parents' will be published as a high quality publication if we manage to reach the funding goal. I am very fortunate that this project is partly funded by Stiftung Kulturwerk of VG Bild-Kunst. Printing and book binding costs however have risen a lot and additional funding is needed in order to cover this price increase along with extra costs including proofreading and the text by the author.

When more money than the set goal has been raised, the extra money will go to a higher print run.

Thank you for sharing and thank you for your support! ❤️

Becoming Parents is an honest photography project whereby .baechle documents her family life in a raw and unfiltered way. She records the changes in her body and explores the full emotional spectrum of becoming a parent, not only through joy, love, happiness and fulfilment, but also anger, despair, exhaustion, fear and pain. The honest portrayal of both physical and emotional transformations during the transition to parenthood, allows other parents to feel seen and understood, whilst offering future parents and those without children a more realistic insight: one that contrasts with the romanticised imagery of mainstream media and the polished self-portrayal on social media.
