"The Outsider" | London
In succession of my photo "The Shaper", this is the second image of a series in which I explore whether characteristic features and dynamics of various group roles can be made visually tangible through the language of architecture.
Today: "The Outsider"
An outsider is part of a group but not actively involved in its processes. This can result from personal traits, external circumstances, or social dynamics. Outsiders often feel uncomfortable but at the same time fear drawing attention from the group.
There are three types of outsiders:
Immature outsider: Experiences developmental delays or social difficulties, making it hard to integrate into groups. Often withdraws voluntarily.
Mature outsider: Feels more comfortable on the fringes of the group and consciously avoids conflict resolution, even when in the right.
Unfairly excluded outsider: Is excluded without valid reason (e.g. due to appearance). This can lead to severe psychological distress and long-term consequences, particularly if avoiding the group is not an option.
