How do you ask permission from a stranger to take their picture?

It's not that hard actually. What I usually do is smile and say a form of greeting (a small friendly nod goes a long way!). Then, I observe. I show interest in what they are doing, and when I feel like the timing is right, I ask, "May I take a picture of you?" while pointing at my camera. That usually does the trick.

I took this picture during my tour at the temple of Ta Phrohm (aka the Tomb Raider temple). I was immediately drawn to this woman when I saw her sitting at a nondescript corner of the temple. When I got near her, I smiled and donated some money. To my surprise, she beckoned me to sit in front of her as she put on an orange bracelet made of yarn on my wrist. She then proceeded to chant some sort of prayer while I bow my head to show respect. Afterward, I stood up, thanked her, and not wanting the opportunity to go to waste, I asked her (while pointing at my cam) if I could take her photo, which she happily agreed to.

Been busy with grad school so I haven't had the time to post pictures, but me and my batchmates did a mini photoshoot last Friday so I thought I'd share some of the pictures here. 🍁🍂

People lining up to give their offerings.
A little girl holding an incense.
A man smelling a lotus flower.

This set of photos were taken at Sisowath Quay in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. I thought it was just gonna be another uneventful night when I noticed bright lights and heard festive music across the street. Naturally, I went to the source and was pleasantly surprised by the events that unfolded in front of me. When I asked a random stranger, she said that they were celebrating the 2019 Mid-Autumn Festival.

What I like about travel photography is that you become a ghost in the sense that you turn invisible to others when you're taking pictures. In this case, I was a ghost in the moment of peaceful offerings, burning incense, and silent prayers. Moments like this, when I get transported into a totally different world, remind me of how diverse and beautiful our world is.

Sommer - Herbst - Winter - Frühling

It's been almost a year since I arrived here in Germany, and it still fascinates me how everything changes with the season. In the Philippines, our year is just divided into two: scorching heat of summer and relentless rain during typhoon months. I thought I'd share with you the pictures that I took of a random tree during all four seasons. This photo was 9 months in the making, so yes, I am excited to share this with y'all.

A Story in 4 Pictures

I was strolling along the Royal Palace Park in Phnom Penh when I saw a boy throwing corn kernels to feed a flock of pigeons nearby. He seemed to enjoy it a lot. While I was taking burst shots of him feeding the birds, a girl took notice and decided that she too should also be included in my pictures. Looking at these photos, I think she made quite an entrance. 😅

Although I greatly enjoy travel and street photography the most, I also do portrait photography once in a while. It starts mostly by asking one of my friends, "Hey, do you wanna do a photoshoot?" Then we start brainstorming for photoshoot ideas (ty Pinterest haha), find a suitable location, gather the necessary props, then voila!

shoutout to my friend .purns for being an awesome model haha 🥰

I'm a sucker for sunrises and sunsets. This set of photos were taken at a beach in Panglao, Bohol before our dolphin-watching tour. I vividly remember how I took the first photo because I had to leave my family for a bit and follow the fisherman who was running along the coast. This is why I love taking photos--one moment you're grumpily yawning because 7 AM is too early for you and the next moment, you're madly running in order to get a good composition for a shot 😅. These were all taken using a phone cam btw!!

If you ask me, 50% of street photography is luck. The other 50% is noticing. In the photos below, I had to notice first what was happening (e.g. people walking, cars passing by). Then I try to picture the final photo I want, mostly thinking about how I should compose the photo. With a little luck and a little patience (even if it means crouching for 1 minute to get the 3rd photo 😅), a mundane moment of a stranger suddenly becomes interesting.
