Meine absolute Lieblingstour. Meine Kassette hatte heute allerdings andere Pläne. Leichtester Gang außer Dienst, Beine ebenfalls. 🇨🇭⛰️

One of those days you can’t plan. Morning at Wengelnburg, spontaneous evening at Schliffkopf. A perk of being based in Karlsruhe (Wengelnburg photos are in the previous post).

Did you know that the French call the southern part of the Pfälzerwald the Northern Vosges?

It sounds like a completely different mountain range, but it is actually a bit misleading. Geologically, this landscape has nothing to do with the Vosges. It is simply the southern continuation of the Palatine Forest, with the same sandstone formations and the same low mountain range. Only the name changes once you cross the border.

A good reminder that landscapes do not stop at national borders, even if their names sometimes suggest otherwise.

Ceci n’est pas un musée.
The Pavillon de Flore is part of the Louvre today, but it was once part of the Tuileries Palace, the original royal residence of the French kings.

While the Louvre had already become the museum under Napoleon I, the rulers still lived in the palace next door.
In 1871, during the Paris Commune, the palace was destroyed by fire. Only the two corner pavilions survived: the Pavillon de Flore by the Seine and, opposite it, the Pavillon de Marsan on the Rue de Rivoli.

Two survivors of a royal palace that almost no one recognizes today.

Did you know that Moyland Castle near Kleve once welcomed visitors like Frederick the Great, Voltaire and Winston Churchill? 🏰

The moated neo Gothic castle in North Rhine Westphalia was once imagined by Frederick and Voltaire as a “truth factory,” a kind of philosophers academy where ideas and enlightenment could flourish.

A concept that feels surprisingly relevant again today. ✨

✨ The so-called Marble Hall, also known as the Imperial Hall, is the showpiece of the palace. As its most magnificent room, it was decorated with elaborate stucco marble, which also gave the hall its name. It is a true masterpiece of the Rococo era and a highlight of Balthasar Neumann’s architectural genius. 💎👑

Fun fact: Rooms called Imperial Hall were mostly found in the residences of prince-bishops, reflecting their close connection to the Holy Roman Emperor.

Paradies? For me definitely yes! Especially when I see columns rising like this – St. Blasien is one of the very few monasteries built in the clear style of Classicism, just before secularisation ended the era of great abbeys.

Baroque and snow fits so well .travellers .travellers ...
