Engagement pictures in the Italian Alps ♡

S proposed to N the night before with no one around, then surprised her with engagement pictures the next day 🥰 we had an absolute blast frolicking around, pretending this old alpine hut was ours, and telling the local cows that they’re getting married!

This truly might be one of my favorite spots in the Dolomites, if not the world. ♡

Reimagine: Your First Look

Couples began breaking the tradition of not seeing their spouse before the aisle a few decades ago (don’t get me started on where that tradition even comes from).

We then saw a standard structure of this “first look” moment, where the groom stands facing away, the bride approaches, taps his shoulder, and he turns around to see his bride for the first time.

If you are q***r, that structure may or may not feel authentic to you.
If it does, that is WONDERFUL and PERFECT! You can decide between the two of you who starts facing away, and who taps the shoulder for them to turn around.

But if you want to do something different, here are a few alternative ways to initiate your first look together:
- One partner faces away. The other one approaches and tells their partner to turn around when they are ready
- Meet back-to-back. Hold hands. Turn around at the same time (maybe you countdown, maybe you say NOW!)

After your first look, you can decide whether you want to share your vows privately with each other, or if you simply want to have some quiet and intimate time together before the ceremony.

There’s no wrong way to share this moment. I hope this inspires you to plan a first look with your partner that feels right for you!

I blinked and now it’s almost August + I never shared my highlights of June. Classic. For future nostalgias-sake, here’s a lil recap:

I made the most of a week in the PNW before moving across the world. Sweet time with friends and fam (especially my lil nephews) made the goodbyes a lot harder than I was anticipating.

Though I’ve been living in Europe for almost three years now, something about leaving this time felt so different. Maybe because for the first time in a long time, my plan is to settle. To make a home. To STAY. Not necessarily to stay put…I have built a business that invites a lot of travel, but I do think a season of planting some roots is coming.

Highlights of June in Europe include:

❤️ Attending my first pride!!! And not only that, but I was given a media pass (another first!) and got to have a front-row seat to all the events.
🧡 Spending another week in the Dolomites, and getting to experience the beauty of the mountains from sunrise to sunset with multiple sweetie pie couples.
💛 Meeting up with a couple in Lake Como for a short but incredible couple of days
💚 PORTUGAL. Twice. Once for an elopement that fueled me creatively, and once for a wedding that fueled me relationally. Plz don’t ask me why I didn’t just move to Portugal lol.
💙 So many cutie cats + coos
💜 Finding the place that then became home in July ♡

Castelfalfi, Italy is a restored medieval village tucked in the hills of Tuscany. It’s surrounded by 10,000+ olive trees and home to a castle that’s been standing since around 550 AD. Most of all, like most evenings, the Tuscan sunset makes the space glow orange and is the perfect background for engagement pictures.

I had so much fun with these two and the two friends we made along the way— a lil black kitty and a very friendly fox. Together they drank local wine and danced around the village until the sun dipped below the horizon.

The beauty and quietness of Tuscany continues to awe me.

An Intimate Wedding in Duoro Valley, Portugal ♡

I don’t even know how to put this wedding into words, but it genuinely was so special to me. Just about an hour outside of Porto, Drew + Layla rented out a villa for 10 of their favorite people to stay together to to relax and celebrate. And wow, did they celebrate. Everything about their day was intentional and beautifully emotional.

On day of the wedding, they decided to get ready separately before sharing an intimate first look together. Drew’s mom performed the ceremony, and they shared personal vows that had me in tears.

After the ceremony, they gathered for a cocktail hour. It was so fun taking candid photos of them with their family and friends, something I feel like so many couples want but don’t quite know how to achieve. Then we sat down for a 5-course meal which was split up by toasts, stories, and sneaking away for sunset photos.

You might think that 12 people is not enough to have a good party. You would be WRONG. Drew + Layla had not just their family and friends but just about every vendor on that dance floor and eventually IN THE POOL. That was absolutely a first for me and something I will neverrrrr forget.

D + L, you already know this, but I am so grateful for you. Thanks for trusting me with your stories, for inviting me in, + for making me feel so loved. There’s so many more photos I could share, moments I could try to put into words, but I guess you just had to be there to get it 😉 Here’s to many more years of friendship and banter. (p.s. see ya tomorrow in Barcelona hehe).

The Portugal Elopement of my dreams ♡

Everything about this elopement highlighted what I love the most about Portugal: the coastline, the architecture, and the city atmosphere. We met before the sun rose at Cabo da Roca (Cape Roca) aka the westernmost point of the continental Europe. As the sun came over the horizon, they shared intimate vows in the most beautiful, hand-crafted journal. It truly felt like they were the only people in the world.

From there, we found a cafe in town that was open early enough for us to begin sharing stories of our lives over cappuccinos and croissants. This became one of my favorite aspects of our day: we had the entire day to spend really getting to know each other. I’m not one to stick to surface-level conversations for long, so it’s always such a delight to find people who share a similar eagerness and curiosity to know and be known. What a gift.

By 9am, we were ready to go to our next stop: Monserrate Park. We spent some time exploring the palace and gardens, often in awe of the architecture and thrilled when a little palace kitty decided to be our tour guide ◡̈

After a little nap, we met up to take the metro into Lisbon. Their outfits were absolutely incredible: Rowdy in a vintage thrifted cowboy jacket with a bolo tie that complimented Faith’s choker. We walked around some of my favorite corners of Lisbon before going to the Belem Tower at sunset where they shared their first dance to a song their brother recorded for them. It was so sweet.

The night could have ended then, but instead, they invited me to join them for dinner. We continued our conversation about life + love + resilience over bowls of ramen, found a bakery to share celebratory cake, and celebrated together until it was all we could do to keep our eyes open.

I am so grateful to be invited into such an intimate space. I will never ever take it for granted.

“I cannot believe this is my life”.
I feel myself saying & thinking this every single day.

Yes, that’s partly because I am living the dream I’ve had since I was a lil girl; my dream to live abroad. I’m currently creating myself a home in a beach town in Spain?!! Insane.

& because almost every week, I’m traveling to some of the most beautiful places in the world. I get to be surrounded by majestic mountains and crystal clear lakes, all well documenting love stories of clients who often become friends.

& because my entire career is taking pictures of people in love, while they are traveling, or when they are getting married. My JOB is to CELEBRATE. I can’t make this up.

But above all, it’s because there is a reality in which I didn’t come out as a le***an. Where I hid this part of me; so ashamed, and afraid of all that I would lose. There is a reality where I never experienced living life in abundance and in complete and whole-hearted authenticity of who I am… of who I was created to be.

If you’ve heard my story, you know that coming out cost me a LOT. Tens of thousands of dollars, business opportunities, my home, & my community. I was absolutely abandoned by friends that had become family to me. I was harassed for years. It was devastating.

Yet, there was never an ounce of regret.

& I look at my life now… sheesh. The clients that find me are among the most incredible people in the whole world. All of who are q***r themselves, or who are allies & advocates of our communities. Together we get to share in this life & celebration, & I know we wouldn’t know each other if I had stayed hidden. I wouldn’t be educating other photographers on what it means to be holistically inclusive. I wouldn’t have found a family in other q***r creatives trying their best to bring a little more light into this chaotic world. I sure as heck wouldn’t be spending my mornings running along the Spanish coast. Honestly, I’m not sure I would be here at all.

So here’s to the month of July— where we continue to celebrate all that we are + all that we are becoming as we continue to live in the beauty of pride.

As a q***r wedding photographer and a gay gal myself, I have become soooo passionate about helping my LGBTQ+ couples plan a wedding day timeline that feels so authentic to them.

Here’s the thing. In the USA, we have only had the legal right to marry since 2015. So when we began planning weddings to celebrate our love, we entered a space that had outlines and expectations that were built around heteronormativity. Sometimes it’s hard to imagine something different from what we have seen and been giving, so that’s why I created this series.

Over the next few weeks, we are going to REIMAGINE the wedding timeline through a q***r lens. Aspects of the day we are going to reimagine include:
- Getting ready
- First looks
- The Ceremony
- Group Pictures
- The reception
- And maybe some more. Who knows. After documenting over 30 LGBTQ+ weddings, I have seen so many incredible variations to the typical wedding timeline that I am so eager to share with our communities ◡̈
