The small river cruise ship SANS SOUCI having just cleared the Niederfinow Boat Lift, en route from Berlin towards Stettin.

The new Niederfinow Boat Lift in Brandenburg is one of the most modern boat lifts in Europe. It was constructed as the successor to the historic lift of 1934 and was officially put into operation on October 4, 2022. The structure overcomes a height difference of 36 meters between the two sections of the Oder-Havel Canal.

With a total height of around 55 meters and a length of approximately 133 meters, it ranks among the largest ship lifts in Europe. The ship trough is 115 meters long, 12.5 meters wide, and 4 meters deep. When filled with water, the trough weighs between approximately 9,800 and 9,943 tons and is counterbalanced by 220 weights. Eight electric motors with a combined output of 1,280 kW move the trough. The actual lifting operation takes only about three minutes, while a complete passage takes around 16.5 minutes.

The old Karnin lift bridge is an impressive technical monument on the island of Usedom. It was once part of the railway line between the mainland and the city of Swinemünde, enabling direct train service from Berlin to Usedom. Built in 1933, the lift bridge could be raised to allow ships to pass through the Peene River. After its destruction in World War II, the railway line was largely dismantled, but the distinctive lifting section of the bridge survived. Today, the Karnin lift bridge is considered a landmark of the region and a reminder of Usedom’s significant transportation history.

The small boutique river cruise ship SANS SOUCI at sunset, arriving in Wolgast and passing the Peene Bridge.

Since 1996, the Peene Bridge in Wolgast has connected the mainland to the island of Usedom across the Peenestrom. Designed as a bascule bridge, this combined road and railway structure accommodates both road and rail traffic while also allowing for the passage of larger vessels. It measures approximately 256 meters in length, with the movable section spanning about 42 meters. Due to its distinctive blue paintwork, the bridge is also affectionately known as the „Blue Wonder.“ As the primary northern link to Usedom, it plays a pivotal role in both tourism and regional transportation.
