🚢 Dag 13, deel 1: Op weg naar Seldovia (En de jacht op harige baby’s)
Vandaag lieten we het vasteland van Alaska even achter ons voor een boottocht naar het charmante, afgelegen kustplaatsje Seldovia, gelegen aan de Kachemak Bay. Het zeeleven onderweg besloot direct een show weg te geven.
Eerst spotten we de kuifpapegaaiduiker (tufted puffin). Dit vogeltje ziet eruit alsof het net te lang in de make-up heeft gezeten voor een punkrock-concert, compleet met zware blonde lokken en een knaloranje snavel. Wist je dat deze vogels onder water letterlijk kunnen 'vliegen' om vis te vangen? Ze klappen diep onder de golven net zo hard met hun vleugels als in de lucht.
Daarna stuitten we op de absolute sterren van de baai: de zeeotters.
We zagen een moeder die heel relaxed op haar rug lag te drijven met haar pluizige baby op haar buik. Heel schattig natuurlijk, maar stiekem zijn zeeotters ook gewoon luie genieters: ze wikkelen zichzelf soms in zeewier (kelp) om te voorkomen dat ze tijdens een dutje wegdrijven naar Siberië.🦅
Seldovia:
Huwelijkscrisis op hoog niveau
Eenmaal aangekomen in Seldovia werden we direct verwelkomd door de koningen van het luchtruim: de Bald Eagles (Amerikaanse zeearenden). Wat een gigantische verschijningen. We zagen een dame geduldig op haar nest zitten wachten. Pa arend was blijkbaar even wezen stappen, want er hingen ineens allerlei andere opdringerige arenden rond het nest. Gelukkig kwam vader arend net op tijd binnenvliegen om de hele bende hardhandig te verjagen. Eind goed, al goed: daarna zaten ze weer gezellig samen, romantisch genietend van het uitzicht. (Feitje: arenden blijven hun hele leven trouw aan dezelfde partner. Wel zo handig als je samen een nest deelt dat soms wel 450 kilo kan wegen!).🪵
Visafval en houtsnippers op de Boardwalk
Daarna was het tijd voor een wandeling over de beroemde Halibut Cove Boardwalk (de fotogenieke houten huisjes op p***n). Hier stapten we direct in een wereld van rauwe, Alaskaanse ambachten.Bij de haven stond iemand met chirurgische precisie vissen te fileren. De koppen en graten vlogen ons bijna om de oren. De lokale meeuwen stonden al in de rij voor deze 'all-you-can-eat' Alaskaanse sushibar.
Iets verderop vonden we een lokale houtbewerker die de ene na de andere boomstam transformeerde in kunst, terwijl de houtsnippers in het rond vlogen.
Zelfs de honden hebben hier trouwens een baan. Onze trouwe viervoeter hield vanuit de laadbak van een dikke GMC-pickup streng toezicht op het hele dorp. Of hij hield gewoon de harige buren in de gaten, dat kan ook.
Kortom: Seldovia heeft geen wegen die naar de buitenwereld leiden, maar met zoveel arend-drama, luie otters en hardcore ambachten verveel je je hier geen seconde! 🏔️🦅🐟
🚢 Day 13: Sailing to Seldovia (And the Hunt for Furry Babies)
Today, we left the Alaskan mainland behind for a boat trip to the charming, secluded coastal town of Seldovia, nestled right in Kachemak Bay.
The marine wildlife along the way decided to put on an absolute show.
First, we spotted a Tufted Puffin. This little bird looks like it spent a bit too much time getting ready for a punk-rock concert, complete with flowing blonde locks and a bright orange beak. Fun fact: these birds literally 'fly' underwater to catch fish, flapping their wings just as hard beneath the waves as they do in the sky.
Next up, we ran into the undisputed superstars of the bay: sea otters. We saw a mother floating casually on her back with her fluffy baby hitching a ride on her belly. Cute as they are, sea otters are also professional slackers—they wrap themselves in kelp (seaweed) like a blanket just to prevent themselves from drifting off to Siberia during a nap.
🦅 Seldovia: High-Altitude Marriage Drama
Once we arrived in Seldovia, we were instantly greeted by the kings of the sky: Bald Eagles. What massive, majestic creatures. We spotted a female eagle patiently sitting on her nest. Apparently, dad had been out running errands a bit too long, because a bunch of uninvited, pushy eagle neighbors started crowding the nest. Luckily, dad swooped in just in time to aggressively clear the area. All's well that ends well: dynamic duo reunited, romantically enjoying the view together. (Fun fact: bald eagles mate for life, which is probably for the best when you share a nest that can weigh up to 1,000 pounds!).
🪵 Fish Guts and Wood Shavings on the Boardwalk
Afterward, it was time for a stroll across the famous Seldovia Boardwalk—those incredibly photogenic wooden houses built on stilts over the water. Here, we stepped right into a world of raw, authentic Alaskan craftsmanship.Down by the harbor, a local was filleting fish with surgical precision. Heads and spines were practically flying through the air, with local seagulls lined up like customers at an all-you-can-eat Alaskan sushi bar. A little further down, we found a woodcarver transforming logs into beautiful art, making wood shavings fly everywhere.Even the local dogs have jobs here. One gorgeous husky took its role as neighborhood watch very seriously, strictly monitoring the town from the back of a rugged GMC pickup truck. Either that, or he was just keeping an eye out for those 900-pound furry neighbors.Seldovia might not have any roads leading to the outside world, but with this much eagle drama, lazy otters, and hardcore craftsmanship, you won't get bored for a single second! 🏔️🦅🐟
