Approaching the leopard.
It was late late afternoon when we saw this beautiful leopard at Samburu National Reserve. After enjoying his sunbath the big cat left this tree with the sundowner into the bushes on the ground.

Some good cheetah news from Allwetterzoo Münster, Germany: all 7 cubs of cheetahmother Alwa are doing well and they have started eating meat already in addition to her mothermilk. They do discover the big enclosure more and more and do show typical cheetahbehaviour: they are climbing on elevated parts like treebranches getting a better overview. Only 6 weeks of age they do show already huntingbehaviour in the play with mother and siblings.

After i arrived at Samburu National Reserve i had a very nice phonecall with Action for Cheetahs. We talked about the population and i got information about a mother with a cub, not easy to spot. After a few days we turned to Buffalo Springs on the other side of the Ewaso Nyieroriver. After a few wonderfull days, on the way to the airstrip, we got a call that the mother is right on the way to us saying good bye and hello same time.
Her nearly 6 month old cub is a female. Both are in top conditions and it was a pure joy seeing them thriving through the beautiful landscape of Buffalo Springs. Its likeley that they have passed the river bend in one of the last days/nights. Seeing the cub playing with her mother shows that even this is a teaching in hunting mannors.

My dear followers,
due to the recent sad news of another killing of a female cheetah with cubs in the Masai Mara National Reserve (Nempiris) and the new information that 72 vehicles were counted these days at a cheetahsighting (Milele) i decided today to inform my followers that i not only feel its a bad time for the promised Ngao-book release (a story that happenes during the pandemic years in an nearly empty Mara), but also i will not mark future photo releases from the Masai Mara as Mara pictures, as i will also no longer post cheetah names. Wildlife pictures can have an advertising effect imo to bring people to regions in africa or going for a sighting of special named cat - like as a prominent status - that they wouldnt do choosed by their own decisions/informations and less public internet informations. Its a small step that not everybody will understand and agree, but i feel personally better doing so and perhaps other photographers rethink and maybe are inspired that there is a certain point in my thoughts.
I am a cheetahambassador, my whole life, seeing the Mara for over 40 years (!), i dont want to be part of the problem. Cheeetahpictures must be taken under ethical conditions and rules as i always take care for. Visitors to the parks are necessary to keep conservation running, but its like with a drug: an overdosage can have negative sideeffects. The Mara needs time to recover and heal. Masstourism does effect not only the cheetahpopulation, it does affect the holy grail aswell: the great migration. Enough seen wher gnus are blocked in their route by newly build lodges, by waiting vehicles that cant move, because there are so many. How bad must people feel who have watched the cheetahkills in the last months (Namunyak, Nora, Nempiris). I do hope that the authorities of the community run Mara Gamereserve are learning and begin to understand where their responsibilities are.

As you might remember i intended to release my book "Ngao - The Story of a cheetah" this month. But after i have learned about the sad death of Nempiris in the Masai Mara, she was related to Ngao by same mother Nashipae, i feel its not the right time now.
I dont want to be part of the rumour and speculationmachine about circumstances of her death and the remaining 4 cubs, but the Mara Management should know that the people financing all the jobs in the Mara are watching! It would be good to release the facts about what has happened to this young cheetahmother and what they intend to do with the 4 cubs. The Mara is loosing its cheetahpopulation in the last years, shown by new released material by Mara Predator Conservation Programme. There were meetings by officials, rangers and Cheetah Mara Meru Project and MPCP attending to reverse the increasing loss of cheetahs in the Mara. An important first step to make the Mara a better place for cheetahs. But Nempiris loss is another relapse, difficult to deal with, for everyone involved to give cheetahs a better future and work for their survival in the Masai Mara. I do hope the cheetah gets more attention and respect by the management of the park as this iconic cat deserves and that it is possible to keep a healthy population in this area that once was very famous for its cheetahstories....
