The ubiquity of photographs is a direct consequence of accessibility; yet, the common view often seen in photographs is often uncomplicated to the point of banal. As photographers, we have a responsibility to challenge the viewer, by our personal point of view, and by the kinds of photography we highlight.

In the past week have passed away three photographers: Robert Frank, Fred Herzog, and Peter Lindbergh. Their photographic work, stories, structure, and practice have provided important elements to my photography education. The following is a brief summary who they were, the work for which they’re best known, and examples of their images and short videos.

Robert Frank, Fred Herzog, Peter Lindbergh

With congratulations to Augsburg, it's time to ask again: why visit Augsburg? For me, it's about 3 themes:

Fugger, Luther, and water.

(1) To paraphrase Melanchthon, the Fuggers were to Augsburg, as the Medicis were to Florence. The Fuggers were very wealthy, and the family traces are found throughout the city. (2) While not exactly the biggest fan of Fugger business practices, Martin Luther had also been called to Augsburg to answer questions about his criticisms of church policy and practices. Augsburg itself would eventually play big future roles in the life of the Reformation movement. (3) This past Saturday (July 6), Augsburg received recognition for its historical water management system with inscription as a brand new UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A national holiday in the Czech Republic 🇨🇿, July 6 commemorates Jan Hus (John Huss), one of the most important historical figures in the country for his life's work as theologian, philosopher, linguist, accidental rebel and opponent of the Church, and Bohemian (later Czech) hero. In the capital city of Prague, Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí) is a large open plaza in the historical centre that's one of the most visited attractions of the city. In the middle of the square is the Jan Hus memorial inaugurated 6 July 1915, 500 years to the day he was executed and burned at the stake on the charge of heresy.

Most will associate the German city of Würzburg with the Residenz baroque palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For me, I'll also connect the city with a rapidly changing scene in physics.

I visit and document the former laboratory space where Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered X-rays in 1895 for which he was awarded the first-ever Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901.

Some have called this place "scenic, natural, and spectacular”; some call it “boring, provincial, and extortionate”. I could be referring to Vancouver, but that's a subject for another time. I’ve long struggled with questions of place: what defines "home"? Can those definitions and qualities change with time? Do people have choice(s) and do they apply them in their search? Can people find meaning with "home"? Must "home" be restricted to only one place, or can different needs be met from different places?

In this massive post, I present over 35 highlights with images and personal observations to illustrate why I call the German university town of Heidelberg a "home."

Salzburg is a beautiful city in north-central Austria, next to the border with Germany. To go beyond the history of the Habsburgs, the music of Mozart, and stereotypes of the Sound of Music, the city's Walk of Modern Art pulls wandering perspectives fully into the present, and asks (uncomfortable) questions about what visitor and especially resident want from Salzburg and what they want Salzburg to be.

Maschkera, Fasching, or Oimrausch:

on approach to Aschermittwoch (Ash Wednesday) and the start of Lent, it's that time of the year once again for carnival shenanigans in parts of southern Germany 🇩🇪.

While kids of all ages dressed in costumes and masks are causing tricks and looking for treats, this is *NOT* Hallowe'en. It's the annual pre-Lent season, and residents in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Mittenwald area carry out the historically pagan ritual of chasing out winter for the arrival of spring.
