Antwerp is Belgium’s second-largest city and has been an important center of trade, art, and culture for centuries.

Located on the River Scheldt, it grew into one of Europe’s leading commercial hubs during the 16th century and is still home to one of the continent’s largest ports.

At the heart of the city lies the Grote Markt, Antwerp’s historic main square. It is surrounded by beautifully restored guild houses, many dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. These ornate buildings once served as the headquarters of the city’s powerful trade guilds and reflect the wealth and prosperity of Antwerp during its Golden Age. In the center of the square stands the Brabo Fountain, inspired by the legend of the Roman soldier Silvius Brabo, from whom the city’s name is traditionally said to derive.

Dominating the skyline is the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal, the largest Gothic church in the Low Countries. Built between 1352 and 1521, its 123-meter tower is the tallest church tower in Belgium and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage-listed belfry. The cathedral is also home to several masterpieces by Peter Paul Rubens, including The Descent from the Cross, making it one of Belgium’s most important artistic and architectural landmarks. | Anzeige

Teylers Museum in Haarlem was founded in 1784 and is the oldest museum in the Netherlands.

Established through the legacy of merchant and philanthropist Pieter Teyler van der Hulst, the museum was created to promote knowledge in art and science.

Its historic Oval Room remains one of Europe’s best-preserved museum interiors.

The museum’s collections include fossils, minerals, scientific instruments, rare books, coins, medals, and works by Dutch masters, many of which are still displayed in their original setting.

Teylers Museum also played a role in the history of science. Nobel Prize-winning physicist Hendrik Antoon Lorentz worked here in the early 20th century, and Albert Einstein visited the museum during his meetings with Lorentz. Today, Teylers Museum preserves its historic collections while continuing to present exhibitions that connect art, science, and cultural history.
