In Dushanbe, I ran photography courses for expat women. I loved this job: I could combine my passion for photography with the passion for teaching - AND I got to walk around with my students who were less shy than I approaching strangers and asking for permission to take their photograph.
This woman was sitting across Haji Yakub mosque off Rudaki Avenue and sold head coverings of all sorts. I did pay her to have her picture taken by these foreign women. She told us she was 80 years old. Her life had been hard, all she wanted was peace. In a country that still vividly remembers the civil war, we heard this a lot: all that people wanted was peace.
