After 13 years of intensive badger culling, no further intensive and supplementary badger cull licences will be granted in England, which is very promising.
But one remaining cull licence in Cumbria - a low-risk area for bovine tuberculosis - is set to continue and remain in place until 2029, pending scientific evaluation. Alongside Badger Trust and other groups, we're urging the UK Government to revoke this licence.
The Government's own commissioned research shows that there has been no significant reduction in bTB in cattle, despite over half the estimated badger population being decimated during 13 years of culling in England. This is why the Government should stop using badgers as a scapegoat and focus on cattle-based measures to eradicate bTB, protecting cattle and supporting farmers.
