Hey, I am Denise and I want to show you how I'm taking my self-portraits. Die Liebe zur Fotografie ist bei mir grenzenlos.

I will give you tips and instructions so that you can also start taking self-portraits. Das zeigt sich auch auf meinen Portrait- und Paarfotos. Mir ist es wichtig, euch so authentisch wie möglich zu zeigen, aber dennoch auf meine kreative Art und Weise. Ein Shooting ist daher wie ein Spaziergang mit einer guten Freundin. Da ich schon jahrelang als Portraitfotografin und Paarfotografin arbeite, habe ich ebenfalls meine eigenen Lightroom Presets entwickelt, die ich in meinem Onlineshop verkaufe.

"DENISE, WHAT DO YOU HOPE PEOPLE WILL TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR SELF-PORTRAITS?"

Hello my loves,

short background story: I wanted to be a teacher for a long time. That's why I started studying to become a teacher, but studying in general just wasn't for me. However, I've always loved passing on my knowledge and motivating and inspiring other people. That's also my mission with self-portraits. I think many people would like to try it out, but don't know how best to do it or don't dare because they are afraid of what others might think of them. I want to take these fears away from you and pass on all my knowledge to you so that you can surpass yourselves.

"DENISE, HOW DO YOU BALANCE AUTHENTICITY AND CREATIVITY IN YOUR SELF-PORTRAITS?"

Hello my loves,

I would say that the set-up is always an expression of my creativity, but I as a person bring authenticity to the photo. I also like to slip into other roles or put on make-up like I would never do in everyday life, but I still think I manage very well to keep the photos authentic and convey my personality. Of course, I only use set-ups I can somehow identify with and that I like.

How do you see that? Do I manage the balancing act between authenticity and creativity?

"DENISE, HAVE YOU EVER USED SELF-PORTRAITURE AS A FORM OF THERAPY OR SELF-REFLECTIONS?"

Hey my loves,

most of the time I use self-portraits as an expression of my creativity. I'm always in a good mood when I take self-portraits because it's fun. Self-reflection happens more in terms of poses and facial expressions. I am always willing to learn more and become better and more versatile in my eyes, which by the way is not that easy.
After the death of my great aunt in 2022, my self-portraits were more than that. Somehow I was able to process my feelings better with the help of the shoots and I was also much more emotional. I still really like the photos today.
In general, selfie sessions always mean a break from everyday life for me, which is really good. I then concentrate completely on myself and just do my thing.

"DENISE, HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED TO CONTINUE EXPLORING SELF-PORTRAITS?"

Hey my loves,

to be honest, I have no idea. :D It's always a bit of a love-hate relationship with self-portraits. If I haven't taken any for a while, I usually have to force myself to get in front of the camera again. And when I start, I always think to myself "Wow, why haven't you taken any selfies for so long?". Then I'd love to take some every day, but unfortunately the lack of time doesn't allow me to.
I'm currently doing a lot for and , but when I have a bit more time again, I'll definitely continue here. Spring is slowly approaching and my goal is to take more outdoor selfies.

"DENISE, HAVE YOU EVER COLLABORATED WITH OTHER ARTISTS OR PHOTOGRAPHERS ON SELF-PORTRAIT PROJECTS?"

Hey my loves,

I did a little selfie challenge with the lovely Julia some years ago. Together we came up with an object that we had to take photos with. In this case it was fruit. She took pictures with a pomegranate, I took pictures with oranges. That was definitely a lot of fun.
I did the same thing with my followers once, but hardly anyone took part after the first time. That's always a shame. I'd love to do it again at least every quarter, but it's always frustrating when nobody joins in. Anyone up for it? Let me know in the comments.

so my favourite self portrait artists are Helen Hetkel .hetkel and Nassia Stouraiti . I really love their creativity.
Other photographers who have always inspired me, motivated me and taught me a lot on YouTube are Jessica Kobeissi and Julia Trotti .
A visit to their accounts is very worthwhile.

Hey my loves,

here I'm going to give you an overview of all the programmes and apps I use.

Adobe Lightroom: Creating a colour look
Adobe Photoshop: Skin retouching, feed planning & creating my posts (1080x1350)
Canva: creating reel covers, stories & story highlights
VN Editor: creating reels (less often, I often use Instagram itself, but it's super hard for me because the editing doesn't match the music after uploading)

"DENISE, HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED TO TAKE SELF-PORTRAITS ON A REGULAR BASIS?"

Hey my loves,

I just really enjoy being creative. Admittedly, I sometimes have to get over myself, but that's more because I'm lazy and putting on make-up, setting up and taking down takes up so much time. But as soon as the camera takes the first photo, I'm on fire and usually shoot several sets straight away. I just think it's so cool to see how I've developed over time. Both in terms of the quality of the photos and the expressions and poses. It's still time for me to try something new when it comes to posing. I'm starting to feel like I'm always doing the same thing.

What's it like for you? Do you regularly stand in front of the camera?

"DENISE, HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH SELF-DOUBT WHEN YOU'RE IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA?"

Hey my loves,

I actually have to say that I just don't take self-portraits if I don't feel like it. Although I'm generally really happy with myself, I do of course have days when something about myself annoys me or I just don't feel so good. On those days, I don't even start taking photos. But there have also been days in the past when I realised during the selfie session that things weren't going well and that I was somehow blocked. If this happens, then I'm sad, delete the photos and try to forget the whole thing as quickly as possible. Fortunately, that doesn't happen that often.
That's also a big advantage of self-portraits. You don't owe anyone an explanation. You can do whatever you want and are totally flexible. And if it's not meant to be, then so be it.

Have you ever had a selfie session or a shoot where you didn't feel like it or felt uncomfortable? What did you do then?

"DENISE, WHAT LIGHT DO YOU PREFER FOR YOUR SELF-PORTRAITS?"

Hey my loves,

I usually prefer natural light. I actually always take my photos next to our balcony door. On very grey days I sometimes use a softbox. But I don't really like that. I also have flashes at home, but I have to admit I'm just too lazy for that. It just takes too long to set up and take down. I prefer things to be quick and uncomplicated because I don't usually have that much time. I really like the results with flash, but in my opinion they're not that much better than with available light.
