It’s my 40th birthday! 🎂

Half of my life has been about flying — I started flight school just after turning 20, and somehow never really stopped chasing the sky.

From the Beech Bonanza and Piper Cheyenne…
to the Airbus A320 as a young copilot…
to becoming the youngest MD-11 pilot at the time at 25 years of age!
I have flown long-haul on both the “Diva” (MD-11) and the “Queen of the Skies” (Boeing 747), with a short stop on the 777F along the way.

Looking back, it’s been quite a journey.

And looking ahead?
The industry is changing. The 747 era is slowly fading, and the next chapter will probably be on the mixed 777/787 fleet once the new Boeing 777X arrives.

But with 20+ years of flying still ahead of me, it feels like the best part might still be to come.

I am grateful for all the wonderful people I have met that helped and supported me, who have pushed me forward and kept me safe! At the end of the day, it is all about your family, friends and all the big and small human encounters of everyday life that make the journey worthwhile.

Get close to D-ABYN - the Lufthansa Centennial Queen!

I was doing the outside check on our best looking Boeing 747-8 shortly before our departure from Tokyo Haneda to Frankfurt as LH717. The weather was bad, but the aircraft is stunning! I hope you can appreciate her beauty nevertheless! We pilots and the whole Lufthansa crew loved her!

Here it is: Lufthansa special Centennial jet unlike the others before!
After painting an A321 in heritage Super Star colours and several aircraft with a huge white crane on dark blue ground, has decided to try a less screaming paint scheme on this white A321 with a grey crane. It features twelve different motives selected by Lufthansa staff and each has a small QR code that you can scan for further background info (I guess you would have to board the aircraft on the apron ramp to do so).
D-AIEM is seen here arriving after its first flight from the paint job in Munich to Frankfurt, where it is based.

A special livery… designed from within.

To mark 100 years of Lufthansa, employees from across the company were invited to design a unique anniversary aircraft.

The winning concept: a bold reinterpretation of the iconic crane – stretched across the fuselage in an oversized, flowing design, combining heritage with a modern look.

A design not created in a studio, but by the people who make the airline what it is. This aircraft is a perfect addition to the six blue and white aircraft in the special Centennial livery!

The Boeing 747-400 pax version has become very rare in the world! It is an honour to be one of the last pilots to fly this aircraft, following in the footsteps of so many great aviators before me 👨🏻‍✈️👩🏽‍✈️🧑‍✈️

While other airlines like British Airways, United or Singapore Airlines have had the biggest fleets at the peak of their jumbo jet operations, Lufthansa now remains the largest operator of the type. And although it is roughly five meters shorter than the newer 747-8i (which we also fly), it actually seats seven passengers more. This is due to the fact that the -400 does not have a First Class like the -8. The cockpit is very much the same except for a few details like the analogous mode control panel (MCP), the location of some switches like the autobrake selector or small variations in the communication setup.

Lufthansa currently plans to retire two -400s this year. You better fly them now before they are all gone! Long live the Queen 😎

After all the excitement following its first flight from SBD, Lufthansa’s centennial Boeing 747-8 is resting in the maintenance hangar aka the “Jumbo Hall”. The white crane on a dark blue ground is a majestic symbol! A symbol of 100 years of love for aviation and passenger service since the first Luft Hansa aircraft took off on 06 April 1926.

Which one do you like better? Boeing 777 or 787?

and parked next to each other on the cargo ramp of I have flown the 777F and it was a really excellent aircraft! But the 787 cockpit look’s futuristic… What do you think?

Lufthansa‘s most beautiful jet in decades (or maybe ever?). It looks stunning from every angle, but best from above!
The aircraft came in from the paint shop in San Bernadino and was piloted by Lufthansa‘s chief pilot Nils Ecke and Sebastian „Stocki“ Stockhoff, head of the Boeing fleet. They flew an approach to runway 07C, before executing a missed approach procedure with Frankfurt‘s skyline in the background. The aircraft then landed on runway 07C and was greeted by enthusiasts, media and Lufthansa employees. It’s first flight took it to LAX the next day!

I flew with who I am grateful to for the opportunity to join him!
