Professionalism isn’t loud.

It sounds exactly like the quiet cockpit in this video.

Watching aircraft arrive into Rio de Janeiro’s Santos Dumont Airport from Sugarloaf Mountain gives you a whole new appreciation for the precision involved. Surrounded by mountains, the bay and the city skyline, every approach is a masterclass in flying!

As a pilot, I couldn’t stop watching. As a photographer, I couldn’t stop taking photos.

A special thank you to my Brazilian colleagues who make this approach look so effortless every single day. 🇧🇷✈️

Which approach do you think is even more spectacular than this one? ✈️

10 years ago, this was my office.

The MD-11 wasn’t the easiest aircraft to fly, but that’s exactly why so many pilots still remember it so fondly.

The first photo was taken during arrival into Beijing with an 8-second exposure. As we descended into PEK, the city lights turned into ribbons of light while the cockpit stayed almost perfectly still.

The next two photos show quieter moments: one in cruise (yes, that’s me in the right seat) and one waiting on the ground in Montevideo.

Looking back, the MD-11 had a character unlike any other aircraft I’ve flown. Demanding at times, incredibly rewarding, and full of memories I’ll never forget.

Have you ever flown on an MD-11, or is there another aircraft you wish you could experience again?

This is NOT an Aurora! It’s even more incredible 😳 SWIPE TO SEE ALL DETAILS AND THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT!

These are Noctilucent clouds (NLCs), or night shining clouds. They can only be seen in June/July and form at the edge to space in about 80-85km altitude!

Noctilucent clouds (NLCs) are said to form from the dust of meteors ☄️ or volcanos 🌋 that super-cold ice particles attach to at temperatures of around -120 Celcius. The sun needs to shine at the right angle so that these clouds are illuminated while it is still night time for the observer.

This sight is absolutely mind-blowing and we were able to see it for at least an hour on my last flight from Boston to Frankfurt. Make sure to sit on the right side of the plane when flying west or on the left when flying east to see this fascinating spectacle of Mother Earth 🌍

Turning downwind for runway 25L as the sun rises over Frankfurt.

After a long night across the Atlantic, seeing the first light always feels special. The cockpit wakes up again, the cities beneath us comes alive… and we, the crew of the Queen of the Skies bring another flight safely back to Frankfurt.

One of those moments that never gets old ✈️🌅

Follow along for more views from the 747 cockpit. 👨🏻‍✈️👍🏼

This will be the last summer for the legendary Boeing 747 in San Francisco! is the last airline that you can fly on as a passenger on the Queen of the Skies into and after this summer, they will be replaced by more modern jets. Only a few cargo operators remain to bring the Queen to the Bay Area…

What is your favourite 747 memory?? ✍️⬇️

Fortunately the era of scheduled passenger 747 flights is not yet completely over and you can still see the larger 747-8 variant at airports such as LAX, HND, EZE and of course FRA! But sadly the more classic -400 model will be retired after the summer of 2027 😭

Being a pilot on the Boeing 747 always felt like a distant far away dream for me. When I was young, it was impossible to even think of sitting in that cockpit one day.
Although the shifts sometime get long, the nights tiring and layovers lonely, I am still extremely proud and happy to have chosen this career path. It is more than I could ever have imagined to achieve.
I will try to share my love and passion for aviation with you here on social media. I am doing my best on every flight to get everyone to their destination safely and to make our passengers happy. It is the people that make a difference and I am grateful for your support here that also helps to keep me going. 😊

It’s my 40th birthday! 🎂

Half of my life has been about flying — I started flight school just after turning 20, and somehow never really stopped chasing the sky.

From the Beech Bonanza and Piper Cheyenne…
to the Airbus A320 as a young copilot…
to becoming the youngest MD-11 pilot at the time at 25 years of age!
I have flown long-haul on both the “Diva” (MD-11) and the “Queen of the Skies” (Boeing 747), with a short stop on the 777F along the way.

Looking back, it’s been quite a journey.

And looking ahead?
The industry is changing. The 747 era is slowly fading, and the next chapter will probably be on the mixed 777/787 fleet once the new Boeing 777X arrives.

But with 20+ years of flying still ahead of me, it feels like the best part might still be to come.

I am grateful for all the wonderful people I have met that helped and supported me, who have pushed me forward and kept me safe! At the end of the day, it is all about your family, friends and all the big and small human encounters of everyday life that make the journey worthwhile.

Let’s see where the next flights take us ✈️
