📍Köln, Germany
Carnival festivities in Cologne has turned into a peaceful demonstration this Monday, where tens of thousands of participants showed their support to Ukraine.
Participants gathered at Chlodwigplatz in Cologne in the morning, and wore pale blue and yellow clothes, which represented Ukraine, as well as face masks with the flag of Ukraine drawn.
Meanwhile, some has made posters and banners to support the country and satirize Russia President Putin and condemn his act of invasion.
Cologne Carnival is one of the most prestigious carnival in Europe, with history of nearly 200 years. The demonstration, formerly a parade called ‘Rose Monday’, was an occasion for participants to satirize politicians and current affairs. The theme of the carnival this year was “Alles hät sing Zick” (Everything has its time), and Rose Monday Parade was designated to be held in a stadium.
But in view of the invasion of Russia, the organizer announced last week to cancel the Monday event, replacing it with a peaceful demonstration in the city, which would begin at 10am in Chlodwigplatz, with a demonstration in the city of 4.5km, but the demonstration eventually started at 12:30pm local time.
Germany has earlier announced that it would increase its defence spending by 100 billion euros and provide anti-tank weapons and 500 Stinger surface-to-air missiles to Ukraine, which was seen as the largest shift of the country’s conservative attitude after World War II.
