Time for another former species from Weltvogelpark Walsrode, the Kittlitz's plover (Anarhynchus pecuarius). Walsrode kept this species from 2009 to ca. 2019, and sadly I only managed to get this pretty bad photo of it. Well, it's a photo at least! 😂

The species is currently not kept in any zoo worldwide, according to zootierliste.

Weltvogelpark Walsrode currently has two different subspecies of Common Barn Owl: Western European Barn Owl (Tyto alba alba) and Central European Barn Owl (Tyto alba guttata).

Both subspecies are currently kept together in one aviary in the Uhu-Burg.

Another very beautiful former holding at Weltvogelpark Walsrode, the Fire-tufted barbet (Psilopogon pyrolophus). A single bird of this species could be seen in the park from 2018 to 2025.

This is a species that I didn't realize was so rare until it passed away. It is now kept in only five public collections worldwide: four in Asia and one in Europe, at Zoo Zlín-Lešná in Czechia.

Time for another former species at Weltvogelpark Walsrode, this time one that only lasted about a year in the collection: a pair of Slate-colored grosbeaks (Saltator grossus).

They suddenly appeared free-flying in the park's large tropical hall, the Jungle Trail, in 2022. As far as I know, it was only this single pair in the huge hall, making them anything but easy to spot or photograph! ;) They were also never signed there, so unless you had heard about them online, they were easy to miss!

They remained in the Jungle Trail until it closed at the end of 2023, after which they never came on show again. I don't know what happened to them. They may have died, or perhaps they were moved to a private breeder or another collection.

According to Zootierliste, this species is nowadays no longer kept in any zoo worldwide.

Another former species at Weltvogelpark Walsrode, and this time one that was actually kept as recently as this year, the beautiful Russet-crowned motmot (Momotus mexicanus).

Weltvogelpark Walsrode received a pair from Vogelpark Olching (Germany) in 2024. They went on show in 2025 and remained on show until around July this year, when they were returned to Vogelpark Olching. It was great to see this stunning species at the park, even if only for a relatively short time.

According to Zootierliste, the species is now kept in just two public collections worldwide: Vogelpark Olching in Germany and Xcaret's Aviary in Mexico.

Weltvogelpark Walsrode currently keeps several small dove species that look very similar to one another. Among these, the Plain-breasted Ground Dove (Columbina minuta minuta) is one of the rarest in public collections. According to Zootierliste, it is currently kept in only two public collections worldwide: Weltvogelpark Walsrode in Germany and Africa Dawn Wildlife Sanctuary in South Africa.

Yet another former species from Weltvogelpark Walsrode: the Chestnut-backed scimitar babbler (Pomatorhinus montanus montanus).

Unlike some other former species, these birds did not disappear because the group died out. Instead, they were transferred to another zoo in 2023, specifically San Diego Zoo, marking the end of this species in European public collections (at least for now).

According to Zootierliste, the species is currently kept in only two public collections worldwide: San Diego Zoo in the United States and the Edward Youde Aviary in Hong Kong.

Let's take a look at another former species at Weltvogelpark Walsrode: the beautiful Pompadour cotinga (Xipholena punicea).

This is such an extraordinary species, and I find it very sad that it is no longer kept in any European public collections. It can still be seen in public collections in the United States, Panama, and Singapore, though.
