THE OTHER SIDE - Photography from Eastern Europe

THE OTHER SIDE - Photography from Eastern Europe 31. Bielefelder Fotosymposium und 20. There is, however, still a cultural distance between East and West. There are many reasons for this. Dies hat viele Gründe.

At the 19th and 20th of May 2011 the FSP (research group in Photography and Media) of the FH Bielefeld – University of Applied Science was hosting a symposium about contemporary photography from eastern europe in collaboration with the Wüstenrot Foundation. Photographers and scientists, curators and professors from Ljubljana, Moskow, Bratislava, Opava, Posnan, Budapest, Daugavpils, Vienna, Warsaw,

Wiesbaden, Berlin, Hamburg and Belgrade were holding lectures.

--------------------------------------------------

Today, nearly 20 years after the fall of the iron curtain, Europe is politically and economically united. One major reason is the Western consensus that due to the post-communist transformation processes, East-European societies are still predominantly occupied with assimilating their socialist past, rather than with the development of new processes. Contrary to this opinion, Central and Eastern European stages have seen the entrance of a new generation (of photographers), who, even though their biographical friction point may be the upheaval around 1989, can no longer be described as post-communist. This generation has left behind the disorientation of the transformation processes, and is totally immersed in the Here and Now of a globalised world. Publications and exhibitions have made the work done by young central and Eastern European photographers available internationally, and increasingly well known. The great diversity of the artistic positions is an invitation to compare and to explore. Within the scope of the 31. Bielefeld Symposium, photographers, curators and scientists from Eastern Europe have been invited to open the doors to the Other Side.

--------------------------------------------------

TOBIAS ZIELONY is coming to Bielefeld and will hold the second lecture in our series. So if you are close, don't miss it.

»Tobias Zielony (*1973 in Wuppertal) is one of the most remarkable young photographers active today. His work focuses on the issues of open and latent violence and explores the various forms of present-day (youth) revolts. Zielony is less interested in documenting the conditions under which young people live than in their self-portrayal. It is ›this completely parenthetical form of social behavior‹ that is impressively presented in his work.«

We are welcoming you to the 32nd Bielefelder Fotosymposium at the end of this week:

The Jewish Engagement
with Photography

The powerful Jewish engagement with photography has been felt in numerous photographic positions and theoretical reflections. This fact has, however, so far remained largely neglected in the research on the effectivity of photography. It is not only due to historical interest that the conference places its focus on those impulses from the Jewish tradition which – so the thesis – have also turned out to be especially productive for the visual discourse of the present; even more important is the aim to gain insights for the direction of contemporary photography. The question in the focus of the conference will therefore be how the Jewish culture which is oriented towards writing can be connected to photographic image production. The Research Centre «Photography and the Media» at the University of Applied Sciences in Bielefeld and the department of Hebrew and Jewish Studies of University College, London have jointly organized a conference with international speakers to create a forum of discussion from various perspectives for the Jewish engagement with photography. The aim of interpretative approaches from visual culture studies, theology, psychology and philosophy is on the one hand to expand the reflective space for this medium which is used as an artistic as well as an everyday practical medium, and on the other hand to give new impulses for its creative direction.
