Diving with thresher sharks
-------------------------------------
When thinking about the prehistoric times, most of the people imagine the time when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Dinosaurs appeared about 230 million years ago. But sharks have been swimming in the oceans for more than 450 million years. First mammals appeared about 210 million years ago. The first human-like animal dates to about 4.5 million years ago, whereas modern humans only date back 60,000 years. And recorded civilization has lasted only about 5,000 years.
In the 450 million years, sharks have diversified into over 500 species. Some species as small as 17 centimetres in length, but the largest shark, a whale shark, can be more than 12 metres long. Many species of sharks are apex predators at the top of their underwater food chain. That does not make them necessarily dangerous to humans. Out of more than 500 species, only several have been involved in unprovoked attacks on humans.
Many people are afraid of the sharks even the statistics tell a different story. According to the International Shark Attack File, between 1958 and 2014 there were 2778 confirmed unprovoked shark attacks around the world, which is 6.4 per year. Statistics also tells us that more than 700 people worldwide are killed each year as a result of toaster fires and electrocutions. And on average 3287 people die in road crashes every day. Most people are not afraid of cars, let alone toasters.

Thresher sharks can be 5 to 6 m long and are found in all temperate and tropical oceans of the world. They belong to the family Alopiidae, which derive from the Greek word alopex, meaning fox. The long-tailed thresher shark is also known as the fox shark. Its tail can grow as long as the shark's body. It is a very strong swimmer and can even leap out of the water. For years, biologists have been unsure about the purpose of such huge tails, but recently (in 2010) the mystery has been solved. They use their huge tails to stun and kill prey fish – the technique known as tail slapping. Once they whack the fish with a horizontal, sideways slap, the fish is easy to catch.
Diving face-to-face with these magnificent animals in their natural environment is an unforgettable experience. The photo is taken at a “cleaning station” not far from the Malapascua island in Philippines. The cleaning station is a location where sharks come to be cleaned by a cleaner fish. The cleaner fish removes parasites and dead skin from the shark’s body and from the mouth. It is an example of symbiosis.

Thresher sharks, like all large sharks, have a low reproductive rate and are highly vulnerable to overfishing. Sharks are caught for their fins for use in shark fin soup, a delicacy in Asia. The fins are cut off and still living animals are being thrown back into the sea to sink to the bottom and die. Sharks are at the risk of extinction due to overfishing, with almost 100 million killed each year. If you find yourself in the restaurant that serves a shark fin soup – don’t order it. If not for the sake of the sharks, do it because of your health. Marine organisms absorb and cannot excrete some toxins and heavy metals that enter the oceans from pollutants. These toxins accumulate in a fish’s body as it eats other fish, known as bioaccumulation, and travel through the food web from prey to predator, continuing to increase in density in a process called bio magnification. Big fish eats small fish. Even bigger fish eats big fish. Sharks sit on the top of the food chain. The mercury concentration in the shark fins has been measured well above the World Health Organization’s guidelines. Don’t eat it.

Fall in Berlin
..
Thus sang the jolly Autumn as he sat;
Then rose, girded himself, and o’er the bleak
Hills fled from our sight; but left his golden load.

Opomena

Čovječe pazi
da ne ideš malen
ispod zvijezda!

Pusti
da cijelog tebe prođe
blaga svjetlost zvijezda!

Da ni za čim ne žališ
kad se budeš zadnjim pogledima
rastajo od zvijezda!

Na svom koncu
mjesto u prah
prijeđi sav u zvijezde!

Warning

Be careful, man,
for you are small
under the stars!

Let
the dim light of stars
pass through you!

So you won’t regret
anything when you go,
take one last look at the stars!

Instead of becoming dust
at the end,
pass over into the stars!

Let me tell you a story...

Long, long ago in a faraway village by the sea, a young fisherman named Urashima Taro lived a modest life with his old mother. One fall, the sea was rough day after day and Urashima Taro was unable to fish. Early one morning he went down to the shore and watched the choppy sea. He suddenly noticed three boys close to him, teasing and hitting a turtle with heavy sticks. "How dare you hurt a creature like that?" shouted Urashima Taro, chasing the boys away.

The next day Urashima Taro went to the shore again and saw the turtle's head poking out from the waves. "I owe you my life!" said the grateful turtle as it came out of the sea to meet Urashima Taro. "As a token of my thanks, I would like to take you to the Dragon Palace." Urashima Taro thought this was a splendid idea, but felt that he could not leave his old mother alone at home. "We won't be long," assured the turtle, so Urashima Taro accepted the invitation and climbed onto the turtle's back. The turtle dived deep into the sea

Gliding along, they neared a castle, glittering with gold and silver. From it emerged a charming, beautifully dressed princess, accompanied by her ladies-in-waiting and a host of fish. She took Urashima Taro into the palace, where an exquisite banquet was spread out for him.

While dining endlessly on delicacies and drinking fine wine, he was entertained with gorgeous music and dancing beauties and fish. Urashima Taro was spellbound. Before he knew it, three whole years had passed.

Finally coming out of his spell, Urashima Taro said he wanted to return home. As a farewell gift, the Sea-Princess handed him a three-tiered tamatebako (jeweled hand-box), saying: "If you find yourself in trouble or at a loss, please open it up." With the box tightly secured under his arm, Urashima Taro once more climbed onto the turtle's back and set off for home.

Back in his village, Taro was puzzled to see that the rivers and mountains had changed their shapes beyond recognition and that many trees had withered. Approaching an old farmer, Taro asked him, "Do you happen to know where to find the house of Urashima Taro, a fisherman who used to live here?"

The old man replied, "When my grandfather was a young man, someone by that name was said to have traveled to the Dragon Palace. He was never heard of again." Taro felt lost and lonely. His mother had died and all that was left of his house was an overgrown patch of garden.

Not knowing what to do, Urashima Taro remembered the words of the Sea-Princess as she handed him the precious hand-box. He opened up the top drawer and found a crane's feather. Then he opened the middle drawer; all at once white smoke poured out and enveloped him. In space of few seconds, Urashima Taro became a silver-haired, hunched-over old man. Looking at himself in the mirror that he found in the bottom drawer, Taro was dumbfounded to see how he had aged.
