Wandered off onto a quiet side trail… and there they were. A group of mouflon moving through the forest. I waited, barely breathing, until this ram stepped into the open — horns like works of art, eyes locked on me.

Wild encounters like this are why I do what I do. 🌿📸

🕊️ Urban Berlin Wildlife | Chapter 3: The Spotted Flycatcher

📸 Perched quietly on a mossy branch in Berlin, this little bird may not look flashy — but the spotted flycatcher (Muscicapa striata) is a master of patience and precision.

🌍 True to its name, it hunts by watching intently from a perch before darting out to sn**ch flying insects mid-air. Though once common, spotted flycatchers have declined sharply across Europe due to habitat loss and fewer insects — making each encounter a small gift and reminder of the delicate balance our urban ecosystems depend on.

💡 In Berlin, parks and old trees still provide safe perches and rich feeding grounds, showing that even cities can play a role in supporting vulnerable species if we protect and nurture green spaces.

📖 Chapter 2 featured the firecrest. Chapter 4 is coming soon… stay tuned as we uncover more of Berlin’s hidden wild neighbors.

✨ A tiny jewel of the forest canopy ✨

Here in Berlin’s green spaces, I was lucky enough to meet one of Europe’s smallest birds — the common firecrest (Regulus ignicapilla). Weighing only about 5 grams, this feathered spark still carries a crown of fire: a vivid orange stripe on its head that gives the species its name. 🔥👑

Despite their size, firecrests are tireless foragers, flitting among leaves in search of insects and spiders. Their presence is a sign of healthy, structurally diverse habitats — proof that even in an urban setting, pockets of wildness can support extraordinary biodiversity. 🌿🐦

It’s moments like this that remind us: sometimes the most magical encounters come from looking closer, listening carefully, and slowing down.

🌲👀 Spotted in Berlin: a European mouflon (Ovis aries musimon) quietly blending into the forest shadows.

These wild sheep, with their iconic curved horns, aren’t just a symbol of rugged wilderness—they’re also an example of how wildlife can adapt and persist even in landscapes shaped by people. Originally from the Mediterranean islands, mouflons were introduced to parts of Europe centuries ago, and today small populations roam forests around Berlin.

Encounters like this remind us that biodiversity isn’t only found in far-off wilderness—it’s right here, sharing our urban edges and green spaces. Protecting and connecting these habitats ensures that species like the mouflon can continue to thrive alongside us. 🐏💚

🦅 Germany’s most common raptor—but far from ordinary.
The Mäusebussard (common buzzard) is a vital part of the ecosystem, silently patrolling fields and forests from the North Sea coast to the Bavarian Alps.
They keep rodent populations in check—nature’s pest control, no chemicals required.
