We are not lined up dots. We are circles forever intersecting.

We are Careful Optimist.

As a platform, it is a space for the making and sharing of knowledge that informs aspects of our everyday life. It allows us to meaningfully reflect on what informs our choices when it comes to production and consumption of technology. Our area of focus will be mainly on tech, electronics and cyberspace, digital trends/innovation and consumer culture.

Careful Optimist is collaborative, and we aspire to the collective as a fruitful outcome of our subjectivity. At the core of our ethos is the belief that the human-made world is but a tool. Our work is to learn and reflect on ways this tool can enhance our lives; how it can be healthily put at the service of our humanity.

Apple recently released a Watch Face inspired by Afrofuturism.

We have penned and article offering our take on what this means. We raise questions about Apple’s intentions. Reflect on Pan-Africanism, Unity, Lights as well as the “region of opacity” as implied in the design and implementation of the watch face.

For those into Apple Watch, just put out a new watch face inspired by, yep, AFROFUTURISM, and it’s called Unity Watch Face. The colours you see in the image reference the Pan-African colours, by the way. Nonetheless, you can change the colour as you want (Yes, because Afrofuturism also infers being able to chose your own colours).

This is the second attempt by the company to acknowledge the culturally-diverse disposition of Blackness and “African-ness”.

It is a noteworthy gesture. Yet, this road to the future is long!
