We are often asked: What makes h-aero® different from conventional drones?

We have put together a clear overview highlighting the key differences and showing why h-aero® is the better choice for many applications.

The comparison speaks for itself.

July at h-aero®: Real flights. Comparable data. Growing applications.

July was about turning capabilities into evidence in the field, in our technical documentation and across new application areas.

In the middle of July, h-aero® completed six measurements of greenhouse gases above Hündfelder Moor.

For a direct comparison, h-aero® and a quadcopter carried the same sensor over the same measurement cell. A setup designed to test the benefits of low noise and minimal air disturbance under real field conditions, instead of merely claiming them.

Since the end of July, a new English technical data sheet has been available for all three platforms:

h-aero zero
zero+
one

It provides clear diagrams covering flight time, wind limits, altitude and payload, making performance easier to understand, compare and plan with.

More use case pages went live in our shop in July. The shop now covers eight fields:

🌾 agriculture
🌲 forestry
🛣️ transport
🏙️ Smart City & 5G
🏗️ construction
✈️ airports
⛏️ mining
🎉 events

More applications. More direct access to the right solution.

We are also happy to announce that Dr. Csaba Singer is officially listed as an expert by the Solar Impulse Foundation and has already evaluated a growing number of external solutions.

We are not only proud to carry the Efficient Solution Label ourselves, but also to contribute our expertise to assessing other sustainable technologies.

More evidence. More applications. More momentum.

For Hybrid-Airplane Technologies, this has been one of the strongest months since our beginning. The current level of project interest, incoming requests and commercial opportunities has exceeded everything we have seen so far.

And that matters.

Because it shows that the market is no longer only discussing the potential of LTA systems. More and more organizations are actively looking for solutions that are available, flexible and built for civil applications.

Another sign of this growing interest is our new h-aero shop. Even without active promotion, it is already attracting visitors, which is a clear indication that people are actively searching for accessible civil LTA solutions.

At the same time, we continue to strengthen the technological foundation behind our systems.

As part of the EU-funded ENFIELD programme, Boeing mentors our autonomous navigation research. For us, this is an important framework to further develop future-oriented navigation technologies and connect our work with experienced players from the aviation industry.

We also made part of our research publicly accessible through the NeuVNav GitHub release and a related publication. Publicly funded innovation should create value beyond a single company through transparency, collaboration and technologies that can serve civil applications in the long term.

This month also brought us together with other innovation projects at the Quanderland network meeting as part of MoReNAT-Q. These exchanges are valuable because they allow us to look beyond our own field, discuss future technologies and connect with partners working on complementary challenges.

The LTA market is gaining momentum and we are ready for the next phase.

We dream of a world where children know lighter-than-air aircraft as naturally as airplanes.

Because aviation is changing.

For most people, flight still means airplanes, helicopters or drones. But lighter-than-air technology is becoming relevant again — not as nostalgia, but as a practical answer to very different challenges.

Some companies are developing large airships for cargo, with concepts for up to 60 tonnes of payload. Others are working on passenger transport, high-altitude platforms or regional mobility.

With h-aero, our focus is different: civil, professional low-altitude applications where endurance, low noise, safety and flexible sensor payloads matter more than speed.

Depending on the configuration, h-aero can carry payloads in the range of 1 to 5 kg — making it relevant for environmental monitoring, infrastructure inspection, research and industrial observation.

Not every aircraft needs to fly fast from A to B.

Some need to stay where data is needed.

And maybe that is exactly why the next generation should see lighter-than-air aircraft not as something from the past, but as part of aviation’s future.

Last month, we had the opportunity to showcase h-aero together with Lenovo and NVIDIA during a series of successful trade fair days.

One of the key highlights was the presentation of three different payloads, demonstrating once again how flexible h-aero is as a platform. It is not designed around a single use case, but built to integrate different sensors, systems, and partner technologies for professional monitoring, research, infrastructure, and industrial applications.

Working with strong technology partners like Lenovo and NVIDIA shows the potential of this approach: combining lighter-than-air aviation with advanced computing, data processing, and application-specific payloads.

We also welcomed a new team member in product development: Tobias Beckmann. Tobias will support us in the further development of our digital systems. Since we already introduced him in detail in a previous interview post, I will keep it short here: we are very happy to have him on board and look forward to what we will build together.

Another point that remains especially important to us is our clear positioning in the market.

Hybrid-Airplane Technologies is currently one of the few LTA companies that consciously stays out of the military sector while operating profitably. This makes us the market leader in the civil LTA segment.

In a field where many developments are closely linked to defense budgets, we are proving that there is another path.

Our focus is on civil, industrial, and scientific applications, from infrastructure and environmental monitoring to research and professional data collection.

For us, this is more than a business decision. It is a statement about the future of lighter-than-air technology.

Welcome to the team, Tobias Beckmann.

Tobias is joining HAT to work on the browser-based control and monitoring interface for h-aero — the interface through which the aircraft can be monitored and operated live.

To introduce him properly, we asked him five short questions:

1. Briefly introduce yourself. Who are you, and what are you bringing to HAT?
I’m Tobias Beckmann, a full-stack developer and IT consultant with my own company in Cyprus. My focus is on modern web technology — React and TypeScript on the frontend side, Python on the backend. For HAT, I’m building the UI for control: the interface through which the aircraft is monitored and operated live.

2. What especially attracted you to HAT and our mission?
The combination of ambitious engineering and meaningful application. Hybrid airplane technology is technically fascinating, but it also addresses real challenges: more efficient aviation, new application scenarios, and a lower ecological footprint. At HAT, something actually flies at the end — and that makes the work especially motivating.

3. What will you be working on with us specifically?
I’m working on the control and monitoring interface for h-aero — the central interface between pilot and aircraft. It visualizes telemetry and sensor data in real time and gives the operator intuitive access to the relevant controls. The focus is on clarity, low latency, robust fallbacks, and a modular architecture that can grow with the system.

4. What especially excites you about lighter-than-air technology?
It rethinks aviation. Conventional aircraft need constant energy just to stay aloft. In the hybrid approach, the gas carries a large part of the load, while the propulsion system takes care of the rest. That is elegant, efficient, and opens up use cases with longer operating times, quieter operation, and lower consumption.

5. What are you most looking forward to in the coming months?
The moment when the UI talks to a real aircraft — no more mock data, but live telemetry. That transition from code to actual flight behavior is where a software project becomes a real product.

Great to have you on board, Tobias.

From understanding principles… to applying them at scale.

For over a century, light-based measurement methods have helped us understand complex systems.
Today, these same principles are opening new possibilities for monitoring our planet.

As part of the MoReNat-Q project, our h-aero® Low Altitude Platform Station (LAPS) is contributing to a new generation of atmospheric observation.

Equipped with advanced gas absorption spectrometry, onboard computing, and real-time connectivity, our systems enable precise, continuous measurements directly where data matters most.

This marks an important step in a broader development:
From isolated measurement to scalable, real-time environmental intelligence.

Building on proven science.
Extending it to real-world impact.

Together with our partners:

GFZ Helmholtz-Zentrum für Geoforschung
Universität Münster
Technische Universität Braunschweig
EFTAS Fernerkundung Technologietransfer GmbH
nanoplus Nanosystems and Technologies GmbH
and supported by the Bundesministerium für Forschung, Technologie und Raumfahrt and ,

we are advancing new ways to better understand and protect our environment.

More insights from the project coming soon.
