DID YOU KNOW: if you say "hey Syd, I'd love to plan a project in Rome" I will hop on a plane and show up with pizza in my hands faster than you can say "Non rimandare a domani quello che puoi fare oggi!".

Photo work for the incomparable in Rome, 2021.

I’ve been sifting through thousands and thousands of images over the last several weeks as I work my hardest through the busiest season of my life- all the while staring at the beautiful faces of all those I’ve photographed and thinking “wow I cannot wait for these to see the light of day!”. There’s a mountain of work piled up within a mountain of hard drives and I am so grateful for all of it + so excited to dive into sharing.

But, before we dive into those mountains of images, let me share my own heart with you. In the midst of the busiest wedding season of my existence- crying with you, laughing with you, pouring my heart and soul into the love stories of others- I celebrated my own love story in late July. We exchanged vows on a blustery cliff overlooking the ocean and gathered our friends and family in my parents’ backyard on a hot summer day. We cried together, we laughed together, we poured our hearts and souls into each moment. The amount of care and support we felt from our loved ones was quite honestly breathtaking.

For today, I’m going to keep it simple and focus on the photo-related aspects. We were incredibly lucky to have our dear friend (photos 3 and 9) fly over to us in NS to document what was easily the best weekend of our lives. I need an entire post dedicated solely to her in order to begin to even scratch the surface of how much she means to me, both as a fellow photographer and as a friend (and that post will follow soon!). Suffice it to say for now that our entire wedding experience would not have carried quite the same magic without her care, her immeasurable talents and her ability to make everyone she meets feel so entirely at ease.

(CONTINUED IN COMMENTS BECAUSE I’M NOT WILLING TO MAKE THIS ANY SHORTER ❤️❤️❤️)

Wedding season has officially begun, and this is gonna be a big one!! Two years’ worth of cancellations, rescheduling and more rescheduling has meant that this year took shape in a unique way- and we knew that would also mean that our approach and mindset would shift and evolve as we navigate all sorts of change in order to best serve the people who trust us with their memories.

So, last month, before diving into this new season, we gathered together and started with connection- connection to ourselves, and connection to each other as fellow wedding photographers. We started with fresh eyes, fresh perspectives and deliberate reflection regarding our “why”- all while taking in the splendour of the Algarve Coast in Portugal. I couldn’t have asked for a better way to move into this new chapter of celebrations. I’m so grateful to share these experiences with such inspiring people. I’m so excited for this year. Let’s do this!

Ellen and Nick: a full weekend of love that I will remember for the rest of my life.

Two of the kindest, gentlest souls I’ve ever met.

Two years of planning alongside each other as we navigated postponed plans, uncertainty, and more uncertainty; I think we all felt a little like we were dreaming when we finally got to hug each other on Saturday. Family and friends and loved ones made up for lost time throughout a beautiful, twinkly light-filled reception at Pier 21 and a full evening of dancing and singing during their melse at St. Mary’s Boat Club the next day. So much joy, so much energy, and so much love!

(And a special thanks to real-life angel for second-shooting for me, and a note of gratitude for and her kindness and love and skills!!)

This is Maha. ✨

One of the greatest privileges of this line of work is to meet so many humans who light up as they speak about the things that give them purpose and passion. Maha is one of those people. The joy and energy with which she spoke about her ideas and her projects was infectious, and I’m so grateful for the time we spent together. 🤍

I’m missing weddings a whole lot. Can you tell?

Real-life angel recently made me cry happy tears by sharing the kindest words about her wedding photography experience. My intention in sharing these words with you is to share the joy and gratitude that I feel when receiving this kind of feedback, and to hopefully create a ripple effect of joy as a result of sharing. Joy for me, joy for you, joy for everyone! Britanny says:

“Hiring Sydney as our wedding photographer was one of the best wedding choices we made. It was easy to communicate with her prior to the day, the process was positive, and she was clearly interested in helping us make our day happy and stress free.

Sydney has a kind, warm, and overwhelmingly loving presence. I cannot stress enough how wonderful she was on our wedding day. She guided us through the wedding photo process with such ease, we had no idea what we were doing, and ended up with (if I do say so myself) STUNNING wedding photos. She captured so many little moments that we will cherish looking back on forever, and the one or two photos I wanted to make happen (inspired from my wedding Pinterest board etc.) she made them happen.

Looking through Sydney's wedding portfolio you will see captured moments of love, warmth, and happiness. That is what she will bring to your special day. I would work with Sydney again in a second, and would recommend her to anyone on their wedding day.

Thank you again Sydney!!”

If you need me, I’ll be over here basking in the warm glow of words of affirmation like 🥰🥰🥰 so so so much love and gratitude for Britanny and Graham.

Something I’ve always said is that when I’m photographing moments for others, my priorities not only lie in the creation of a final visual product but also in the facilitation, support and documentation of authentic connections between people. These connections exist between the individuals who are being photographed together, and between me and the individuals I am photographing.

I’ve been reflecting on the way my own experiences shape the way I connect to others- and by extension, the way I photograph the connections that exist between other people- and I’ve noticed a shift as I review past wedding work. I’m more and more drawn to the small physical manifestations of love between individuals than I ever have been before. I think this is directly related to the fact that I’m an ocean away from my own family and missing them more and more each day- missing those small, physical manifestations of love between myself and the people I care about.

All of this to say- I’m grateful for the ways in which this job requires consistent, careful self-reflection in order to be my best self on a personal and professional level. It’s a constant lesson in self-awareness; it’s not just a job, it’s a way of being. Being an artist is inextricably intertwined with mindfulness, and that mindfulness has deepened my capacity for happiness and peace.

It’s the coolest feedback cycle. And that’s the end of my evening ramble. Tell the people you care about that you love them.
