The earliest trees to bloom in Prague are usually Almond trees (Prunus dulcis). They are most commonly found in the large almond orchard on the sloping hills of Petřín. However, I came across this particular old tree while walking along one of the central streets of Prague.
I was captivated by the contrast between the delicate white blossoms and the dark, gnarled branches and trunk set against the backdrop of surrounding buildings. The interaction between the Almond flowers and an old lantern added a special charm. A vibrant splash of golden-yellow forsythia in bloom enhanced the scene even further, making it impossible to resist capturing this enchanting moment of spring.

Last Friday (6th of March), I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the Garden Books and Garden Photography Award Ceremony at Schlosspark Dennenlohe. Being invited to such a special event was already a great honor but even more so because I received 3rd place in the European Garden Photography Award category at the International Garden Photographer of the Year (IGPOTY' 19) competition.

The European Garden Photography Award, organized in collaboration between Schlosspark Dennenlohe and IGPOTY, celebrates the beauty, diversity, and importance of gardens and plants through photography.

The gardens of Schloss Dennenlohe, created and designed by Sabine and Robert von Süsskind, surround one of Bavaria’s finest Baroque castles and include the largest rhododendron park in southern Germany. Walking through these remarkable landscapes while meeting other award winners garden photographers and garden book creators made the experience truly memorable.

I feel deeply honored to have received this recognition and very grateful to have been part of such a beautiful event.

And of course… I couldn’t resist taking many photos while exploring the gardens, so stay tuned, as I’ll be surely sharing some of them here!

Congratulations to all the talented winners, and a heartfelt thank you to Sabine and Robert von Süsskind for the warm hospitality and wonderful organization!!

P.S. The last two photos were kindly taken by my photographer friend at the IGPOTY Winners Exhibition in Kew Gardens, as I unfortunately couldn’t attend the award ceremony there in person this time.

This week I started showing the photos of Villa Cipressi with Wisteria blooms, so why not to go further and dedicate today’s post to the plant itself? Its too early, but looking out the window at our still-sleeping garden which won’t awaken for quite some time, my botanical soul requested something more for inner harmony ))

So meet amazing Wisteria!
Collection of Wisteria photographed in Dendrological garden Pruhonice (Dendrologická zahrada Průhonice), Prague.

The cascading clusters of violet, lilac or white Wisteria flowers create a soft, romantic atmosphere and fill the air with delicate fragrance. This elegant climber has inspired gardeners, poets, and artists for centuries.
In Japan Wisteria symbolizes love, longevity and humility. The famous wisteria festivals celebrate its graceful beauty, and the flowing flower clusters are often associated with devotion and endurance.

In China, wisteria represents friendship, honor and respect. It appears in classical paintings and garden design as symbol of harmony and refined taste. Its twining growth reflects connection and lasting bonds between people.

Across Europe, especially in countries like Italy and United Kingdom, wisteria conveys romance and nostalgic charm. Draped over old villas and cottages, it evokes a sense of timeless beauty and gentle rhythm of seasonal change.
Its arrival each spring feels like a celebration of renewal, hope, and quiet strength.

Belonging to legume family, wisteria is a vigorous, deciduous climber with twining stems and elegant, pinnate leaves. Its flowering display usually arrives in mid to late spring, sometimes just before the leaves fully unfurl, creating that magical cloud-like effect we all admire.

Two of the most beloved species are Chinese wisteria, Wisteria sinensis and Japanese wisteria, Wisteria floribunda. The Japanese types are especially admired for their impressively long flower clusters, which can reach dramatic lengths and create a truly theatrical display.

These images are suitable for editorial use in garden magazines, botanical books, educational publications, and seasonal features about spring flora.

Villa Cipressi in Varenna with Wisteria Blooms.
Set directly on the water’s edge, Villa Cipressi unfolds in botanical terraces that step gently down toward the Como lake. Stone staircases guide you through archways, cypress-lined paths, and panoramic viewpoints that make you pause every few meters.
From late March till the middle of April Wisteria hangs gracefully over the pergolas and walls in soft violet cascades. Thick, sculptural trunks twist around historic structures, supporting fragrant clusters that hang like floral chandeliers above the pathways. In the early morning, the blossoms catch pale gold light against the deep blue of the lake. It feels romantic and slightly wild. Standing beneath that canopy of Wisteria, you get the quiet feeling that this is a moment you will carry long after you leave.
The gardens host Mediterranean and exotic plants that thrive in Lake Como’s mild climate, so there is always something to notice.
As the gardens become quite crowdy during peak wisteria bloom, arriving early would a lovely reward.

Spring ephemerals are the quiet leaders of the season.
Before trees leaf out, these small but determined plants take advantage of a short window of light. They rise, bloom, feed early pollinators and then gently retreat underground until next year. They are brief and resilient. And they remind us that the timing is everything.
Here are some of the early spring stars worth celebrating:
Eranthis hyemalis (Winter Aconite), Helleborus orientalis (Hellebore), Crocus, Galanthus (Snowdrop), Chionodoxa luciliae (Glory-of-the-Snow), Hepatica transsilvanica (large blue Hepatica, Liverwort), Scilla siberica (Siberian squill), Cyclamen coum (Eastern sowbread), Petasites (Butterbur), Ornithogalum umbellatum (Garden Star-of-Bethlehem), Gagea lutea (Yellow Star-of-Bethlehem)
Its a true spring arrival celebration after a long winter time. Its almost over...

Monte Palace Madeira Tropical Garden. Funchal, Portugal.
Large terracotta pots as decorative elements in garden design at Madeira Monte Palace tropical gardens.
Making a stong visual impact and adding more Mediterranean amosphere to the garden with warm earth palette of terracotta, burnt orange, clay red, sandy beige, honey-colored or soft grey. Against deep green foliage, burnt orange and clay red become even richer. Large terracotta pots reinforce this palette naturally. The more weathered, the better (Think of villas in Tuscany or countryside estates in Provence where strong geometry softened by plants).
The key is balance.
- Warmth against the green density
- Structural calm within botanical abundance
- A timeless European villa feeling
Would you use such element for creating the Mediterranean atmosphere in the garden?

Camellia 'Milo Rowell'.
Photographed at Parco delle Camelie, Camellia Park, Locarno, Switzerland.
Elegant, timeless, and effortlessly charming Camellia ‘Milo Rowell’ is a true garden classic. Its soft pink, semi-double blooms are beautifully layered with delicate, ruffled petals and a glowing center of golden stamens. Blooming from late winter into early spring, it brings a much-needed splash of color when the garden is still waking up.

With glossy, deep green foliage and a graceful, upright habit, this camellia makes a stunning feature plant, hedge, or container specimen. It thrives in partial shade and loves rich, well-drained soil, rewarding you year after year with abundant blooms.
