Jokulsarlon, Iceland.
📍64,0478060, -16,1800480

Jökulsárlón is a glacial lagoon by the ring road and was recently designated as a part of Vatnajökull National Park. Its still blue waters are a sight not to be missed, as it is dotted with the icebergs from the edge of Breiðamerkurjökull, a part of the Vatnajökull glacier.

The lagoon flows through a narrow gateway into the Atlantic Ocean, leaving the spectacular sight of the large chunks of ice on the black sandy beach. In wintertime, the fish-filled lagoon hosts a number of seals, which visit the lagoon for an easy meal. Year-round curious seals can be seen basking on the blue-tinted icebergs.

The lagoon is accessible from the beach all year round, and so is the café on the banks of Jökulsárlón. For hikers, a marked hiking trail between Jökulsárlón and Fjallsárlón is recommended as a scenic trip through unforgettable surroundings. A word of warning - don't jump onto the ice floating in the lagoon. Some tourists think it’s okay to do it, but it is dangerous play, and the ice can capsize leaving you stuck beneath it in the ice-cold water. So let's be very careful here.

Reynisfjara Beach, Iceland
📍63,4029630, -19,0428980

Reynisfjara black sand beach is the most famous beach on the South Coast of Iceland. Its beautiful black sand, powerful waves, and the nearby Reynisdrangar sea stacks make Reynisfjara a truly unique place to visit and a popular filming location (Game of Thrones, Star Wars and more).

Reynisfjara Beach is one of the most well-known black sanded beach in the whole world. This is a place of wild and dramatic beauty where the roaring waves of the Atlantic Ocean power ashore with tremendous force.

In 1991, Reynisfjara appeared on the top ten list of the most beautiful non-tropical beaches in the world, and it is very easy to see why it was chosen! It is said that to stand on Reynisfjara Beach is akin to being in a natural amphitheater where the white water of the Atlantic waves provides the drama.

At any time of year, and in any light, this is a place of great beauty which will remind people that they can never be far from the powerful forces of nature which shaped the island of Iceland. Marvel at the power of the ocean but do not stand too close – those masterful waves deserve your respect and can be quite dangerous if you get too close!

Svartifoss, Iceland
📍64,0272800, -16,9749840

A short walk in South Iceland provides visitors with a breathtaking view of Svartifoss (Black Falls). Ice-cold meltwater from the Svinafellsjokull glacier feeds the famous Svartifoss waterfall. The waterfall tumbles down 20 metres (80ft) over a cliff which is bordered on both sides by tall black basalt columns, resembling pipes of a giant organ, which is where the waterfall gets its name.

This wonder of natural architecture inspired the design for Iceland’s National Theatre and the Hallgrimskirkja church in Reykjavik. The hexagonal columns form inside a lava flow which then cools extremely slowly, giving rise to crystallization. Similar well-known lava formations are seen at the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland, and on the island of Staffa in Scotland.

Diamond beach, Iceland.
📍64,0403430, -16,1828900

This is mainly a dawn shooting point and it is recommended for the blue hour. My advice to arrive 45 minutes before the sunrise to catch beautiful hue in the sky.

It is recommended to use a gradient filter of neutral density with a soft transition to 0.6 ND.

Start shooting with a long shutter speed without additional filters of neutral density. Recommended exposure time is 1-2 seconds.

When it becomes lighter, it is advisable to use a polarizing filter, which will remove unnecessary glare; continue working with a long shutter speed.

The most beautiful shots are obtained in the campfire sunlight. I recommend using a wide-angle optics, min 16mm.

The best shots are obtained near the ice floes. In this case, you need to use high shoe covers to keep your feet dry.

The strength and stability of the tripod is of great importance; after shooting, remember to wash the sand and salt water from the tripod with fresh water.

This shooting point is one of the coldest, even in good weather, so it is advisable to dress very warmly and bring a warm flask. Additionally, you can get beautiful photos of ice floes by using macro lenses.
