Leica Summicron-M 1:2/66 – the reinterpretation of one of the rarest lenses in the history of the Leica M-System.

A spy lens for a secret mission

Originally, the Elcan 66 mm f/2 from the late 1960s was developed by Dr. Walter Mandler at Ernst Leitz Canada for a secret mission of the US Navy. The specially manufactured lens was intended for covert reconnaissance photography. In a series of around 200 units, it was intended to combine maximum resolution with high light intensity and a compact and unobtrusive design.

The Summicron-M 1:2/66 continues the history of this exceptional lens as part of the Leica Classic Line. Building on the original concept, the unusual focal length opens up new photographic possibilities and closes the gap between classic normal and portrait focal length.

Limited to 660 units worldwide, each Leica Summicron-M 1:2/66 is a unique piece of Leica history. In November 2026, the lens will be auctioned at the exampleitz Photographica Auction in Wetzlar with the series number 001 – the first numbered edition. A special opportunity to acquire an exceptional piece of contemporary Leica history.
