Mr. Giakoumis, Rizokarpaso, Cyprus.
From my ongoing series, Free Besieged.

I photographed Mr. Giakoumis in Rizokarpaso, where he lived with his wife in one of the last houses at the edge of the village.

He was part of the small Greek Cypriot community who remained in their homes after the war and division of Cyprus in 1974, known as the enclaved.

Mr. Giakoumis passed away a few years ago. This portrait is my way of remembering him and the place he called home. broncolor official worldwide

While photographing in Spain for Grounded, Pilar told us about Alonso Sanchez, a shepherd who brings his flock to graze on grain left in harvested fields, a traditional practice known locally as espigadero.

Each summer, he walks with his sheep for three days from Villar de Peralonso to Parada de Rubiales, in Salamanca.

Family and friends accompany him, helping care for the animals along the way. A shared effort that keeps this tradition part of everyday rural life. broncolor official worldwide

Women play a central role in growing the community’s food. Traditionally, they take the main responsibility for cultivating crops such as sorghum and maize, while men mainly tend the cattle. View Ethiopia Tour broncolor official worldwide

In Liopetri, Cyprus, I met Giorgos Theodorou, 64, who has worked the red soil of Kokkinoxoria (Red soil villages) since childhood, following his father and grandfather into the fields.

At eleven, he was already driving the tractor, taking only bread and water with him. Today, the harvest is still the moment he looks forward to most.

“This is the most satisfying moment. You see your work come together.” ORTH broncolor official worldwide

Chief Ollijare of the Mursi tribe, Ethiopia’s Lower Omo Valley.

After five hours of driving, we reached their camp in a remote part of the savanna. Ollijare had just returned from seven days away hunting. He and his community welcomed us and showed us around the camp.

Among the Mursi, scarification is a traditional form of body decoration practised by both men and women. Known as kitchoga, these raised patterns are created through small cuts that heal into decorative scars. View Ethiopia Tour broncolor official worldwide

From the Grounded series for Ask ORTH.

In Fuentesauco, Salamanca, I met Oscar, a third-generation farmer continuing the work his family has carried for years. Chickpeas are an important part of this land, but every season brings different challenges — from the soil and the weather to the changing climate.

For Oscar, farming is not only work. It is family, responsibility and passion.

“Every year is not the same. You have to learn to adapt yourself to the climate, to the soil, to the crops.” ORTH broncolor official worldwide

During my time in Ethiopia, I came across a story in the Omo Valley that stayed with me.

This is Yacob, from the Karo tribe.

Through my guide, and now good friend, View Ethiopia Tour , I learned about Lale Labuko and the children he has helped rescue from the Mingi tradition.

I visited the place in Jinka where some of these children live, study and grow up, and I had the chance to photograph a few of them.

Yacob was one of them.

At the time, I felt I was only touching the surface of this story.

My goal is to return to Ethiopia, spend more time documenting the children, Lale and the work being done there, and create a body of work that can eventually help raise funds and support for them.

This portrait is the beginning of that story. 🇪🇹

In Akaki, Cyprus, I met Mr. Solon Gregoriou, 79, who has spent decades cultivating cactus fruit on land that is dry, hard and full of stone.

For him, farming is more than work. It is something he has carried with him throughout his life.

At Atsas Olive Farm in Petra, Cyprus, I met Anastasia Panteli, 29, the farm’s agriculturist. Coming from a family of growers, she always knew she wanted to work close to nature.
Her work begins in the fields, taking care of the olive trees and adapting to the changing conditions of each season.

“It makes me proud to see our work become a product that people appreciate.”

Part of the Grounded series for ORTH . broncolor official worldwide Atsas Organic Products Limited
