Icons of Curaçao

Icons of Curaçao Catch a glimpse of Curaçao through the eyes of photographer Roger Gibbs. Icons of Curaçao presents: The Fishermen’s Project, by Roger Gibbs.

There is no doubt that Curaçao’s fishermen are hard workers. These are men risk their lives on a daily basis in order to make a living. Not only is this lifestyle slowly disappearing on the island, but many fishermen are underappreciated. Fascinated by their perseverance and work ethic, Roger Gibbs took a creative interest in photographing them back in 2003. Armed with a Graflex Super D camera and

a 8 x 10 Deardoff camera from the 1930s and 1940s, Roger Gibbs took on a decade long journey to capture the beauty, passion, danger and seriousness of what fishing as a profession entails on Curaçao. On June 27th 2014, we will catch a glimpse in the lives of Curacao's fishermen through the eyes of Roger Gibbs, at a 1-day gallery showing at NAAM. Icons of Curaçao sets out to do its fair share of corporate social responsibility through photography in the hopes to inspire positive change.
