A real life Dragon 🐉

Meet the Northern Eyelash Boa (Tropidophis boulengeri), this semi aquatic snake usually spends its nights waiting in ambush for its prey along streams mostly feeding on small fish, tadpoles and even frogs. They can be found in Ecuador, Colombia and Panama and measure around 35cm when adult.

Rafael Steinlesberger and I were searching hard when Maximilian Benesch spotted this individual on the side of the river during a night walk in Canande Reserve guided by Jaime Culebras

This was one of our top targets and getting to see one at last was such a dream! It was tough to get good shots as it was really wet and creating plenty reflections but this is one of the best shots I managed. Although I don’t love the reflections it does help to show this species aquatic nature and so it kinda works in a way.

We ended up seeing another 2 of them which Max also spotted, he was on fire 🔥

I’ve got another couple of shots which I will probably post at a later date but I hope you enjoy this one in the meantime!

Colonus cf. sylvanus predating on a smaller ant-mimicking Jumping Spider 🕷️

It’s not uncommon for spiders to predate on other spiders however it’s still not something I see very often so I was very keen to document this fascinating behavior! Jumping spiders are always hard to photograph but they tend to be a little bit calmer when they have prey making it somewhat easier to get a shot. There was still a bit of movement creating some issues with the stacking but managed to save it pretty well in helicon.

Jumping spiders are really amazing in so many ways and observing them is always fascinating! They’re such incredible little characters 😍

Here is another shot of this absolutely gorgeous Crab Spider I found in Spain on a walk with Edu Salvador 🔎📸🦋
She was so pretty and covered in pollen from the flowers she was in, it was during the afternoon and quite hot up in the hills where we were near Castellón so she was a bit active but I was lucky she stopped a couple of times for a quick stack and I really like this pose and the spot she is on! 😍

An absolutely epic find from Ecuador, this Jumping Spider has succumbed to a type of Cordyceps, most likely Gibellula sp. which is an endoparasitic fungi that infects arachnids.

I can’t remember exactly who spotted it but this was with Rafael Steinlesberger Maximilian Benesch and Jaime Culebras during a night walk in Yarina Eco Lodge

I was super excited about this one! I love how fresh the fungus is and that it is still so colorful and with these perfect fruiting bodies! Fungi in the Cordyceps group are absolutely fascinating and a perfect example of natures boundless ingenuity!

Can’t ever get enough of these fluffy butts! Especially when they’re in such a beautiful leaf! 😍

I’ve definitely shot this species countless times but it never gets old! They’re a bit challenging as they love to move and turn their butts towards the camera so that always keeps it interesting too 😂

It’s a nymph of a Planthopper in the Biolleyana genus and they are often found in the leaf litter and quite often on freshly fallen leaves like this one!

Baby Green Iguana 🦎

Went for more of a minimalist approach for this one, closeups and details are awesome but it’s nice to take a step pack too sometimes and get more creative with your composition. This extremely busy scene turned into a soft dreamy landscape by opening up the aperture placing myself just at the right spot to reveal the subject in a hole between the leaves.

Iguanas are amazing reptiles and this species can grow up to almost 2 meters long! 😍

One of the coolest Longhorn Beetles ever, the legendary Harlequin Beetle! 🪲

When I first spotted this beauty it was perfectly still at head height on the side of a large tree, I took some wide images to document it and then moved it to a lower spot so I could try some focus stacking. Luckily even after moving it remained still for enough time that I could get this beautiful portrait. But then it flew off and with all my excitement I tried to catch it without keeping a good eye on my surroundings. I hadn’t seen a large root which I then tripped on and while trying to save my camera from hitting the ground I turned in mid air and had a pretty hard landing. At the time it felt a bit sore for sure but I had no idea that I had just cracked a rib and that the following weeks would be pretty painful..

But I’m pretty sure I’d do it again without any second thought, sometimes you just can’t control yourself when you’re too excited!

Finally time for my first post from the trip to Ecuador! 🇪🇨

One of my favorite subjects from this adventure was this stunning Frog (Boana picturata) - it’s hard not to fall in love with them instantly! Those huge oversized eyes and amazing patterns and colors surely make this frog totally unique!

It is commonly known as the Imbabura Tree Frog and can be found in the pacific lowlands of Colombia and northwestern Ecuador. We saw this one on a night walk with Jaime Culebras in the Canande Reserve which is an absolutely amazing area and definitely worth a visit!

After taking several pictures of it posing on a branch it jumped down onto a rock next to the river where it blended in beautifully with the earthy wet rocks surrounding it.

Mating Thorn Bugs (Umbonia crassicornis)

Here you can see two mating pairs and an extra male hoping to get lucky, it shows the sexual dimorphism quite well and you can see how the pronotal horn of the male is darker and more curved towards the back.

After mating females will lay a clutch of around 100 eggs just below the bark of the host plant which in this case was Calliandra surinamensis. The mother will guard the eggs until they hatch and then she will continue guarding the babies until their adult stage where they will be able to fly off and find a mate to continue their life cycle!

They communicate through vibrations, they do this to alert each other of dangers as well as for courtship calls.

Such amazing little insects aren’t they?! 😍

A beautifully camouflaged Selenops cf. banksi
These masters of disguise hide amongst the tree trunks in the rainforest waiting for prey to come nearby before grabbing them with incredible speed and accuracy!
Another cool thing about this species is that they can glide or control their direction while in the air, so when danger arises they can jump off the trunk and glide back to it instead of falling down to the ground! Pretty amazing adaptation isn’t it?! 😍
