The Galapagos Giant Tortoise is the largest tortoise in the world with males weighing up to 400kg and living for over 150 years.

They are easily one of my favourite animals to photograph and spend time around. This shot was taken in the Santa Cruz highlands on the Galapagos Islands on a recent photo workshop.

Photographing Small Birds in Flight:

Basic Settings
Shutter speed: 1/3200-1/5000
Drive mode: Highest Continuous Burst
Tracking mode: Locked on/Sticky
AF mode: continuous (AF-C/AI Servo)
Subject Detection: Bird Eye AF

Compose for Flight. Position your focus area to the side of the frame so the bird has room to fly into. You’ll keep the subject in frame for longer, and the composition will look much better with the bird flying into space.

• Start on a Branch. Acquire focus while the bird is still on a branch, then use sticky/locked on tracking to stay focused as it takes off. Small birds change direction fast, so keeping focus is key.

• Don’t Zoom in Too Tight. Leave yourself a little extra room you can always crop in later and although you will be giving up megapixels its better than cutting of a part of the bird.

• Look for a Clean Background. A clear, distant background helps your autofocus stay locked on, creates a beautiful bokeh and makes the bird stand out

The most amazing animal encounter I have ever experienced …
-
A group of white faced capuchins and spider monkeys were interacting, grooming and seemingly living in harmony.
-
Then I saw this very strange exchange where one of the capuchins had its hand on top of the completely still spider monkey, head bowed.
-
These species rarely tolerate each other, let alone share the same branch. Seeing them connect like this, calmly and without tension, felt like I was seeing a secret side of the rainforest.
-
These moments are once in a lifetime and the sense of wonder and achievement you feel when you get a shot like this is second to none. Out in the wild not waiting by a feeder for “that perfect shot” along side 10 other photographers. Just really capturing real incredible moments as they unfold… This is wildlife photography ❤️

One of the world’s weirdest birds…
-
The Boat-billed Heron, this species is pretty hard to spot in the wild and especially hard to get a clear photo without a stick in front of its face.
-
Luckily I have a reliable place to see them here in the Osa peninsula and got really lucky that this guy flew out into the open. Me and some of my guests on the most recent Costa Rifa workshop got some amazing shots of this weird looking creature.
-
Also the sound they make is really weird especially when you hear it at night.
-
There are still a few spots open for the end of 2026/ start of 2027 workshops if you would like to see these guys in the wild.

Most people never see this in the wild…
-
This is the Fiery-billed Aracari, we found a nest during recent workshop in Costa Rica and all got some great shots. I never get bored of seeing these incredible birds, their colours in real life are even more vibrant than in photos.
-
If you would like the opportunity to photograph one of these birds in the wild we still have a spots available for late 2026/ early 2027.

A beautiful moment…
-
The spider monkey is one of the 4 species of monkeys found here in the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica and my personal favourite to photograph.
-
They seem to have a deeper emotional intelligence than the other species and the way they swing through the rainforest is just magical to watch.
-
This was taken on the way back from one of our safari days in a recent Costa Rica workshop.

Kingfisher Killing…
-
We saw this green kingfisher in the last few minutes of our river cruise during one of my recent Costa Rica workshops.
-
We missed the hunt sat and watched as it smashed its prey against the tree before swallowing it whole and flying off.

We saw a Yellow-throated toucan bathing in the base of a tree and waited, shoulders burning for flight…
-
The water splashing as it took off made for some pretty cool images.
-
Loving my new camera set up… anyone that says your gear doesn’t matter is lying 😅 at least when it comes to wildlife photography.
-
This shot was taken during the first Costa Rica workshop of 2026 which just ended and went amazingly.
-
5 more to go for the first workshops of the year 🙂
