Mid-air standoff in the cloud forest. ⚔️

Freezing a high-speed territorial dispute up in San Gerardo de Dota. The sheer speed and explosive energy of these hummingbirds going head-to-head is completely unreal. Letting the heavy glass lock down the focus on that iridescent plumage right in the middle of a dogfight is exactly why we shoot.

Unbothered in the high canopy. 🐒

Catching a howler monkey looking down with absolute, stoic judgment is peak jungle energy. The sheer contrast of that dense dark fur against the bright, backlit foliage of the Osa Peninsula is exactly what the heavy glass is built to pull straight out of the shadows. Just raw, unfiltered attitude from the deep south.

A prehistoric stare against the iconic blue. 🦖

Catching a Green Basilisk is one thing, but framing it up with the vivid, natural blue of Río Celeste in the background takes the contrast to a whole new level. The hyper-sharp texture on those scales popping against the smooth water is exactly what the high-res sensor and heavy glass are built to capture. Just a raw, dinosaur-like portrait straight out of the jungle.

A flying prism in the cloud forest. 💎

The sheer spectrum of color on this hummingbird is completely unreal. Catching this level of hyper-detail and raw iridescence against the lichen up in San Gerardo de Dota is exactly why we haul the heavy glass into the mountains. When the light hits just right, it’s game over.

Looking straight up from the summit of Irazú. 🌌

Catching the Big Dipper and the North Star hanging over the volcanic landscape is all about timing and waiting for that heavy cloud cover to break. When the sky finally clears at this altitude, the sheer scale of the stars is incredible. Letting the 20mm f/1.8 open wide to pull in that light brings out the deep blues and the faint atmospheric glow right above the silhouetted tree line. Just a massive, crisp night sky doing exactly what it does best.

High-altitude reset. 🌸

There is a specific kind of quiet up in San Gerardo de Dota that completely clears the mental bandwidth. Catching this hummingbird taking a hard pause against that massive wall of vibrant pink is exactly the kind of raw, untouched stillness that makes hauling the heavy glass into the cold entirely worth it. No noise, no daily grind, just pure color and the slow pace of the mountains doing the heavy lifting.

Finding the pause button in the cloud forest. 🌿

While the rest of the world is grinding through the daily commute, hauling the heavy glass up into the altitude of Monteverde pays off with moments like this. Catching a hummingbird completely still, contrasting against that deep, moody green backdrop, is the exact kind of isolation that clears up the mental bandwidth. No traffic, no crowded streets, just crisp textures, absolute focus, and the heavy quiet of the mountains doing the work.

Watching the sky tear itself apart from a safe distance. ⚡️

Catching a massive system dumping over Orotina all the way from the high ground in Nuevo Arenal. There is something completely humbling about watching a storm of this scale light up the horizon in total silence. You don't need to be in the middle of the chaos to feel the raw power of the wet season rolling in. Just absolute, unfiltered energy doing its thing while the mountains stay quiet.

Precision in the lowland humidity. 💧

The jungle out in Guápiles runs entirely on its own rhythm, completely disconnected from the noise of the city. Catching this hummingbird perfectly hovering to feed, with the light hitting the fresh moisture on the vibrant bloom, is the exact kind of raw, untouched moment that makes hauling the heavy glass into the thick of the lowlands worthwhile. Zero concrete, zero rush, just the absolute focus required to freeze a split-second connection in the wild.

Deep in the southern canopy. 🌿

Down in the Península de Osa, the jungle operates entirely on its own timeline. You don't just walk in and demand a shot like this; you have to earn it by slowing down and sinking into the absolute, unfiltered quiet of the rainforest. Catching this white-faced capuchin moving through the heavy green with a baby on her back is the exact kind of raw connection that makes the heavy glass essential. Zero concrete, zero noise, just the deep south doing its thing.
