Dr Gabriel A. Jamie is taking a blood sample of a white-bellied kingfisher. This trip to Salonga was one of the most intense things I have ever done. Waking up with the ornithologists before sunrise, and photographing everything all day until deep in the night, scouting for frogs and spiders with entomologists and herpetologists.

In 2022, I was invited to photograph an expedition to Salonga National Park, located in the central Congo Basin. Spanning over 3.5 million hectares of lowland rainforest, it is the largest rainforest reserve in Africa and the second-largest globally.

Where would this story be without the help of . Born and raised in Bijagua, Donald’s knowledge of the forest extends far beyond his hometown. More than ten years ago, he saw potential in a valley once scarred by cattle and decided to bring it back to life.

What was once degraded pastureland is now Tapir Valley — a thriving 100-hectare sanctuary for the endangered Baird’s tapir, countless bird species, and even new discoveries like the Tapir Valley Tree Frog.

Donald’s vision is a living example of what local conservation can achieve: restoring balance, one tree — and one tapir — at a time. Gracias Amigo.

From the story: Tales of the Forest Keepers: Safeguarding a Fragile Bond.

Little is known about this enigmatic tree, which defies seasonality and fruits according to its own unique cycle. Yet, habitat fragmentation and pressures from agriculture threaten this fragile connection. With both the Jícaro Danto and the Baird’s tapir listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List, their fate is deeply intertwined. Conservation groups and environmentalists are intensifying efforts to protect this rare ecosystem, preserve habitat, and foster awareness within local communities, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding these delicate interdependencies in Costa Rica.

From the story: Tales of the Forest Keepers: Safeguarding a Fragile Bond.

In Bijagua, the Sandoval family’s backyard offers a rare glimpse into a changing landscape where wildlife and human lives intersect. Neighboring this property is Marlon Calderon Brenes, a seasoned tour guide who recalls a starkly different past. "When I started working here 20 years ago, we never saw tapirs. For the first ten years, they were shy and elusive, confined to the higher parts of Tenorio National Park," Marlon shares. Today, the story is different. Due to shrinking habitats, young tapirs are being pushed out by territorial females, forcing them to venture beyond the dense forests, crossing gardens, and even navigating cattle pastures in search of food. The tapir visiting the Sandoval property bears bite scars from these struggles. Such open wounds increase the risk of screwworm infection, as the fly lays its larvae exclusively in open wounds. The community, alongside local conservationists, keeps a watchful eye, ensuring the animal doesn’t succumb to further complications.

Takes of the Forest keepers! A story I have been working on for years, is finally published for the first time by . The story is about the fragile symbiotic relationship between the Bairds tapir, the largest mammal of Mesoamerica, and an endemic tree. A story about ecology, fragmentation and the people working quietly to protect this ancient bond. Beautifully written by Anne Broeksma. Thank you and for trusting this outcome, and trusting in the tapir om the cover. It means more than you know! A huge thanks as well to the incredible people of Bijagua who welcomed me, guided me, and made this story possible. Later this week I’ll share more about these conservation warriors.

Besides his work as wildlife vet and conservationist joins for some of the most challenging aspects of the job- teaching the next generation the importance of scientific driven conservation actions. Like the GPS collars we put on tapirs in the Biological Corridor Tenorio Miravalles to mitigate farmer - tapir conflict and collision casualties. As a conservation photographer, it can be hard sometimes to really put the photos to work, luckily Jorge does just that. One night we photograph Jicaro crossing the road, and literally the next day Jorge has the local crew pouring speed bumps to mitigate traffic casualties. Honoured to be part of ‘s team.

Last week, I was in Siena for the , as the story "Tales of the Forest Keepers: Safeguarding a Fragile Bond" was nominated for the Nature and Conservation category.

It has been a wild journey and an incredible honor, considering I've been working on this story for so long, battling heavy rain, camera failures, kittens, and sleep deprivation.

The Baird’s tapir, recognized as nature’s ‘gardener of the forest,’ plays a critical role in dispersing the seeds of an endemic tree known as the Jicaro Danto. Both the tapir and the Jicaro are endangered. As fragmented forests push tapirs out of their natural habitats, leaving them scarred by territorial disputes and competition, they face increased risks of infection from a flesh-eating parasite, the screwworm. In the small village of Bijagua, a diverse team has come together with an inspiring mission to ensure the survival of this extraordinary symbiosis.

Jan Mertens sits at the light trap along the Luilaka River, looking for his target family: "Sphingidae", better known as "Hawk moths". Estimates suggest that a massive 90% of invertebrates remain to be described, and if there was a better place than Salonga to find some, one would be hard-pressed to find it.

In 2022, I was invited to photograph an expedition to Salonga National Park, located in the central Congo Basin. Spanning over 3.5 million hectares of lowland rainforest, it is the largest rainforest reserve in Africa and the second-largest globally. Designated a national park in 1970 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, Salonga remains one of the least-explored regions of the Congo Basin. Organized by , this Biodiversity Express Survey (BES) aimed to conduct a comprehensive assessment of biodiversity across multiple taxa, focusing on poorly documented and unstudied biological communities.
