You can't ignore the birds when you are in one of the best birding countries of the planet! Although I was limited in the amount of places I could visit within my budget, there were a few birds I had really been looking forward to finally seeing or seeing again. The birding highlight of this trip was definitely seeing Crescent-Faced Antpitta, but there was a very strong supporting cast with White-capped Tanager, Oilbird, Andean Cock-of-the-rock (male and female) and more. See them all on: https://naturebylennart.com/birds-blog/special-birds-of-the-andean-cloud-forest/.

Shortly after Spain I went on a last minute trip to Colombia! I had been keeping track of the behaviour of a certain cat for a few years. Not long after I had searched for it in vain in Ecuador, this Northern Oncilla started showing up at Mirador El Roble in Colombia. As the cat would sometimes disappear for days or weeks it was hard to plan for it, but he seemed quite reliable at the start of 2026. Then I finally found some time and decided to go for it: I didn't regret it! Read the full story here: https://naturebylennart.com/wild-cats-blog/up-in-the-clouds-finally-northern-oncilla/.

In February this year we went to Spain in order to see Iberian Lynx. It was a trip with more rain than we had hoped for, but our efforts were also rewarded with great lynx sightings and some top quality Spanish birds on the side. More here: https://naturebylennart.com/birds-blog/back-to-the-first-cat-iberian-lynx/.

Collared Inca is one of my favourite hummingbirds to watch. With the flashing whites in their tail they immediately draw the attention and they have the attractive habit of hovering for a relatively long time on one spot. Since I had the opportunity I took the time to get some flight video!

And after little more than a week that was it! I don't think I'll make it a habit to cross the ocean for just 7 days, but in this case it was worth it for me. It was a surprisingly succesful trip on which I not only saw my target Northern Oncilla, but much more excellent birds as well. I really enjoyed Colombia and I hope I will be back one day!

March 26: Final full day in Colombia! Clearly there was a limit to my amount of good fortune and this day was rather boring with no Oncilla. However it was still very enjoyable to spend another day in the Andes and I still saw some nice things. I was particularly happy with the observation of White-throated Screech Owl which is an owl of the cloud forest that I hadn't seen before. Tomorrow will be the final videoreport of my departure. It's been fun!

On March 25th I spent another day at and I saw the Northern Oncilla again. That never gets old! I also went out the previous night to do a bit of spotlighting and saw a much desired mammal. And there were hummingbirds!.

Another day in Colombia! I spent March 24 at Mirador El Roble where I had another great sighting of the Northern Oncilla. Furthermore I saw nice new birds such as Chestnut-naped Antpitta and Yellow-eared Parrot. And of course there were many hummingbirds to enjoy!

On March 23 I had one of those rare great days on which everything works out. It started early at 5.00 when I had a big walk around Jardin looking for birds. I saw some new ones. Then it was time for Reserva Los Guacharos where I connected with one of the most bizarre birds on the planet: Oilbird.

And if that was not enough I saw a female Cock-of-the-Rock, a pair of Torrent Ducks and White-capped Dipper on that very same spot. Then I went in the car to Mirador El Roble where I would stay for 3 days hoping to connect with my target: Northern Oncilla.

On the way I happened to hear one of my most desired birds by chance: White-capped Tanager! In the rain I arrived at El Roble.

The day had been great, but would get even better. See for yourself what happened next 🙂.

Sound on!

When I thought about what else I wanted to see besides Northern Oncilla I immediately thought about two birds: Crescent-faced Antpitta and White-capped Tanager. I had searched for both in Ecuador and I find White-capped Tanger a seriously beautiful and interesting species. Although they are quite widespread in the Andes, they are always on the move, which makes it not an easy species to see.

As there were not really any reliable places for me to go to within the area I was in, I did not think It would stand any serious chance of seeing it in the time I had.

But on a day when everything went right, this was another bonus. Love those days! As I made my way upwards from Jardin to Mirador El Roble, I heard one from the car and soon after I was enjoyiny a whole flock of them!

Stay tuned for the other stuff of that day in my videoreport tonight!
