Ya hace… uish... 40 años mas o menos, que trabajo en la costura. La amo. Me encanta trabajarla y me ha dado muchos frutos… paramos por favor porque me da mucha emoción hablar de esto… que pena las lagrimas pero de verdad me da much emoción. Por medio de la costura saqué a mi hija adelante, bachillerato, universidad. Ella es ingeniera petroquímica y vive en Qatar. Me invitó a visitarla allá… todo esto pasó por medio de mi amor y dedicación al trabajo de la costura.

It's been… wow… 40 years or so, I've been working in sewing. I love it. I love this work and it has given me a lot of fruits... let's stop please because talking about this makes me very emotional… I’m sorry for the tears but this really does make me feel a lot of emotion. Through sewing I got my daughter through high school and university. She is now a petrochemical engineer and lives in Qatar. She invited me to visit her there... all this happened through my love and dedication to sewing.

Tengo cinco años que llegué aquí a Bogotá y me ha tocado un poquito duro pero ahi voy guerreándola con mis hijos… solo. Tengo cuatro hijos con el bebé. Me vine de Venezuela en el 2016 porque mi hijo mayor es asmático y estaba muriendo allá porque no habían los medicamentos. El padre del bebé prometió apoyarme pero se desapareció.

I've been here in Bogotá for five years and it's been a little hard for me, but I’m still here fighting on my own, me and my children. I have four children with the baby. I came from Venezuela in 2016 because my oldest son is asthmatic and was dying back there because there were no medicines. The baby's father promised to support me but he disappeared.

"Siempre me ha gustado la música. Soy de Boyacá... mi papá y mi abuelo eran músicos. Mi papá es concertista, trombonista de la música clásica de Colombia y el estuvo en el Jazz Band de Colombia. Yo de joven comencé a salir a la calle a tocar y así encontré mi propia música y empecé a improvisar. Me gusta expresarme a traves de mi propio estilo de música... Yo viajaba con mi papá, combinaba el paisaje de Colombia con el Jazz de fondo, eso es lo que mas me ha agradado a mi."

My dad was a in a concert band, he played trombone in classic Colombian music and he was in the Jazz Band of Colombia. I was young when I started going out to play music on the street and that's how I found my own music and began to improvise. I like expressing myself through my own style of music... "Yo nací aquí en el barrio hace 60 años y siempre he vivido aquí. Siempre el barrio fue duro, toda la vida ha sido duro, toda la vida. Habían unos delincuentes famosos aquí, matones, pero yo nunca fui un delincuente, siempre fui un personaje de la familia. Nosotros fuimos siete hermanos, todos varones y había una escuela aquí arriba que se llamaba Artulinos donde nosotros estudiamos la primaria pero yo no pude hacer un bachillerato porque éramos muchos hermanos. Mi papá era uno de los mejores plomeros de aquí de Bogotá y nosotros salimos así, aprendimos la profesión. Aquí vivo, construí mi casa aquí, crié a mis hijos aquí. Mi padre nos enseño como trabajar y por eso nunca ni pensé ser delincuente. "

"I was born in this neighbourhood 60 years ago and I've always lived here. The neighbourhood has always been rough. All my life its been rough, all my life. There were some infamous gangsters here, thugs, but I never got in the gangs, I was always a family person. There were seven of us, all boys and there was a school up here named Artulinos where we all went to elementary school but I never went to high school because there were a lot of us. My dad was one of the best plumbers in Bogotá and we got out like that, we learned the profession. I live here, I built my house here, I raised my children here. My dad taught us how to work and that's why I never even thought about being a gangster."

"Este barrio es duro pero la mayoría de la gente que vive aquí son gente sana. Yo he vivido aquí con mi esposa por 55 años. Tengo una muy buena mujer y juntos criamos a nuestros hijos en este barrio. Trabajamos muy juiciosos y enviamos a nuestros hijos a un colegio fuera del barrio. Hoy estoy muy orgulloso de mis hijos... Tengo una hija que esta trabajando en la Clinica del Country y mi hijo esta terminando su carrera en educación física y luego va para Cuba para estudiar una especialización."

"This is a rough neighbourhood but most of the people that live here are good people. I've lived here with my wife for 55 years. I have a very good woman and together we raised our kids in this neighbourhood. We worked really hard and sent our kids to school outside of the barrio. Today I am very proud of my children... I have a daughter that works in the Clinica del Country and my son is finishing his degree in physical education and is going to Cuba soon to study a specialisation."

"Yo como artista, músico y bailarin tengo una ilusión, un sueño, una esperanza de que no solamente aquí en Bogotá si no en todo el país se respete, se valore el arte y que haga mas espacios en los cuales se puede hacer divulgación de la cultura ya que realmente como me sucedió a mi es un factor que hace posible un cambio social y que le ocupa al tiempo a los niños, a los jóvenes... Hubo algo que me cambio mucho la vida y fue el hecho de la danza, yo era una persona super introvertida, super ensimismada, o sea pasaba desapercibido lo mas que podia y después de la danza fue un cambio total... es adueñarse de lo que uno es, realmente es aceptarse como uno es, lo que le gusta sin miedo que la gente lo rechace, sin miedo que la gente lo señale, lo diga que usted es esto, te parece esto... ya deja uno de importarle muchas cosas y empieza a disfrutar lo que a uno le guste."

"As an artist, musician and dancer I have a hope and a dream that not only here in Bogotá but in the whole country we will respect, value art and create more spaces where we can spread our culture, so as what in reality happened to me, art was a factor that allowed me to make social changes and can occupy the time of our children and youth... Something that really changed my life was dance. I was a super introverted, super shy, I was invisible as much as possible but after I started dancing there was a total change... Dance is to own yourself as you are, to really accept yourself and what you like without fear that people will reject you, without fear that people will point at you or say that your are this or look like that... "Hace 12 años unos amigos de mi barrio tenían una banda y yo quería tocar con ellos pero no tocaba un instrumento. Encontré una armónica tirada y con el primer sonido que salió del instrumento me enamoré. Entré a la banda con mis amigos y empecé a tocar y practicar. Había encontrado mi pasión. Desde este entonces he estudiado la música blues y rock y me he dedicado a mi arte. Por medio de este pequeño instrumento he viajado por todo el continente y este año nuestro banda, Southern Roots, va a tocar en Rock al Parque. Quiero decir a todos que con la dedicación y la honestidad se puede lograr sus sueños."

"12 years ago some friends from my neighbourhood had a band and I wanted to play with them but I didn't play an instrument. I found a harmonica that someone had thrown away and from the first sound that came out of it, I was in love. I joined the band with my friends and started to play and to practice. I had found my passion. Since then I have studied blues and rock music and dedicated myself to my art. By way of this little instrument I have traveled the whole continent and this year our band, Southern Roots, is going to play at 'Rock the Park'. I want to tell everyone that with dedication and honesty you can reach your dreams."

"Para ser honesto, Colombia ni siquiera estaba en mis pensamientos cuando llegué por primera vez a Sudamerica en el 2008/09. Pero mientras viajaba en otros países oí tanto sobre Colombia de otros viajeros que decidí echarle un vistazo; y no me decepcionó! Después de haber vuelto a Irlanda por un rato a trabajar, regresé a Colombia en el 2011. Había hecho algunos amigos en Bogotá entonces volví aquí y desde entonces la ciudad ha sido mi hogar. Mientras que la comunidad de expatriados parece estar creciendo aquí, Colombia sigue teniendo una imagen negativa entre occidentales, incluso entre mi propia familia... Tengo un par de obras de amor que tal vez no tendría la libertad en la carrera de codazos en una ciudad europea: mi blog con El Tiempo http://blogs.eltiempo.com/wrong-way-corrigan y el IQuiz noche de trivia. El mundo más mundano de ser profesor de inglés es lo que mantiene la entrada de finanzas, casi! No estoy seguro si Bogotá seguirá siendo mi hogar por los próximos años pero si alguien me hubiera dicho en el 2011 que todavía estaría viviendo en Bogotá en el 2016, hubiera dicho 'no'. Quien sabe, Bogotá me atrae mucho!"

"To be honest Colombia wasn't even on my radar when I first came to South America in 2008/9. But while travelling around the other countries I heard so much about it from other travellers that I decided to check it out; I wasn't disappointed!
After returning to Ireland to work, I came back to South America in 2011. I'd made some good friends in Bogotá so I came back here and the city has pretty much been my base ever since.
While the expat community seems to be growing here, Colombia still very much has a negative image for many Westerners, my own family included. I have a couple of labours of love here that perhaps I wouldn't have the freedom to do in the rat race of a Western city; my blog with El Tiempo (http://blogs.eltiempo.com/wrong-way-corrigan/) and our IQuiz trivia night. The more mundane English teaching is what keeps the finances ticking over, just about!
Whether Bogotá remains my home for the next few years, I'm not sure. Yet if somebody had told me in 2011 that I'd be still here in 2016, I would have said 'no'! So who knows, the place has a bit of a hold on me!"

He vivido en Bogotá desde niño. Mi mamá es Paisa y mi papá Santandereano. Soy técnico de celulares, igual que mi abuelo y mi papá. Ellos trabajaban para empresas como Samsung, pero yo quise ser independiente.

Crecí con mucha influencia de mi abuela Paisa, por eso mi acento es un poco paisa y me encanta la comida de allá.

Un mensaje que quisiera darle a los Bogotanos es que la esperanza de esta ciudad está en los jóvenes. Tenemos que inculcarles buenos valores, darles buena educación. Los jóvenes tienen la habilidad de aprender rápido, y son el futuro. Hace falta mas apoyo del estado para esto. Tengo un primo súper inteligente, el pasó todos los requisitos para el programa Ser-Pilo-Paga de Juan Manuel Santos, tenia todas las condiciones menos una, no era suficiente pobre. Su familia no tiene mucho pero tienen sus cositas, así que le negaron esta oportunidad.

Por falta de oportunidades los jóvenes Bogotanos en ocasiones se vuelven ladrones y recurren a malas decisiones.

Aquí en la esquina de mi trabajo hace poco una noche me atracaron. Yo estaba con mi esposa y un amigo y se me acercó una chica, y luego empezó a gritar que yo la había irrespetado, de repente salieron varios tipos con cuchillos y se lanzaron sobre mi tirando puñaladas. Yo puse mi mano para proteger mi cara y me cortaron la mano y la muñeca. (muestra una larga cicatriz) Me empezaron a esculcar los bolcillos e intentar de robarme, pero en ese momento salieron varias personas y me rescataron. Esa es una de muchas historias de robos o intentos de robos aquí en Bogotá.

Si empezamos a cambiar el pensado de los jóvenes quizá en unos 100 años en Bogotá cambie todo esto."

"I have lived in Bogotá since I was a kid. My mom is from Medellin and my dad is from Santander. I work on cell phones like my grandfather and my dad. They worked for companies like Samsung but I wanted to be independent.

I grew up with a lot of influence from my grandmother from Medellin, that's why my accent is from there and I love the food from Medellin.

A message that I would like to give to the people of Bogotá is that the hope of the city is in the youth. We have to impart to them good values and give them a good education. They have the ability to learn quickly and they are the future. We lack more support from the state for this. I have a really intelligent cousin who met all the requirements for the Ser-Pilo-Paga of president Juan Manuel Santos, he had all of the requirements except one, he wasn't poor enough. His family doesn't have much but they have a few things, so they denied him the opportunity.

Because of the lack of opportunities for young people in Bogotá some turn to crime and resort to bad decisions.

Right here on the corner by my work one night not long ago, I was attacked. I was with my wife and a friend and a girl came up to me and then she started to scream that I had disrespected her. Right then several guys came at me with knives and they jumped on me stabbing me. I put my hand up to protect my face and they cut my hand and my wrist (he showed me a large scar). They started going through my pockets to rob me but in that moment several people came and rescued me. That is just one of many stories of robberies or attempted robberies here in Bogotá.

If we start to change the youth's way of thinking maybe in 100 years in Bogotá will change all of this."

"Siempre he sido conductor, trabajé como conductor de carros privados, camiones, fui el conductor del embajador de La Union Soviética, trabajé en DHL y luego tuve mi propio taxi. Sigo conduciendo, solo que ahora conduzco este carrito de helados jajaja... Un día estaba conduciendo el embajador de La Union Soviética y paramos en una gasolinera cerca la Universidad Nacional. Nos atacó un grupo de estudiantes, creo que confundieron al embajador con un gr**go, le pegaron al carro, un Mercedes negro, con piedras y iban a quemar el carro pero yo aceleré y atropellé a dos personas. Tuve que salir así por el peligro al embajador. Me despidieron de la embajada porque pensaban que yo había dado información a los estudiantes acerca de quien era el carro. Luego compré un taxi pero me lo robaron en Villavicencio. Y ahora, como te dije, conduzco este carrito vendiendo helados."

"I have always been a driver, I worked driving private cars, trucks, I was the driver for the ambassador of the Soviet Union, later I worked for DHL and then I had my own taxi. I'm still a driver, only now I drive this little ice cream cart hahaha... One day I was driving the ambassador of the Soviet Union and we stopped at a gas station near the National University. A group of students attacked us, I think they mistook the ambassador for an American, they hit the car, a black Mercedes, with rocks and they were going to burn the car but I accelerated and ran over two people. I had to get out of there because of the danger to the ambassador. They fired me from the embassy because they thought that I had informed the students about who owned the car. Then I bought a taxi but it was stolen in Villavicencio. And now, like I told you, I drive this cart, haha, selling ice cream."
