4 places within an hour of one lake that’ll ruin every other Alpine trip for you 🏔️ Save this for later.
We based ourselves at Waldhof Fuschlsee Resort on Fuschlsee, and honestly, I’m not sure there’s a better home base in Austria. Here’s what we did:

1️⃣ Fuschlsee
Start your first morning with a walk around the lake itself. The water is the kind of turquoise you think is edited until you’re standing next to it. The loop is about 11 km and takes 2–3 hours, with almost no elevation. It’s the perfect warm-up.

2️⃣Zwölferhorn
Drive 20 minutes to St. Gilgen on Wolfgangsee and take the gondola up. The panorama over the lake and the surrounding peaks is unreal. Up top there’s an easy 3.5 km loop, the Pillstein Panorama Circular Route, or longer hikes if your legs are still fresh. Back down, finish with a slow walk along the lakeshore.

3️⃣ Schafberg
Hop on the Schafbergbahn in St. Wolfgang. This bright red cog railway has been climbing this mountain since 1893, and the view gets better with every bend. From the summit you can count up to 7 lakes on a clear day. It’s one of the best viewpoints in the whole country.

4️⃣ Berchtesgaden 🇩🇪
About an hour’s drive and you’re in Germany, in a region that deserves its own day. Hintersee, Königssee and the Rossfeld Panoramastraße are just the start.
