October 17, 2021 – Noolangeli Tukuyen Lekalkuli brings her camels back home in the evening. They are free to roam during the day to feed on the acacias. Noolangeli lives in a Samburu settlement near a village called Oldonyiro in Isiolo county in Kenya. The Samburu people are closely related to the Massai. Most Samburu still live very traditionally and have hardly abandoned old customs. They highly dependent on their cows, goats and sheep for their survival. Their most important nutrition source is the milk of these animals. As a result of climate change, the semi-nomads have suffered very high livestock losses due to droughts in recent years.

October 29, 2020 - Massa Sanou (36) is a rapper from Dakar who traveled 270 km to Kaolack for the annual Gamou Festival, as the Prophet's birthday celebration is called in Senegal. Like Massa Sanou, Covid-19 could not stop hundredthousand of believers to travel to Kaoloack, the spiritual center of the Baye Niass SufiBrotherhood. As a precaution, Massa wears a mask, which he removes briefly for the portrait. Protection masks were declared mandatory at the event, but because very few people tested positive for the virus in Senegal during that period, the rules and measures were not taken very seriously.

In collaboration with Dominic Eichenberger (Consulting , Text & Concept) I was allowed to produce photos and videos for a nursing home, which served as the basis for a new website that focuses on the people and the atmosphere in the stately villa of the nursing home Rüti in Sirnach with its beautiful garden. Many of my clients are from the non-profit and foundation sector, working for a nursing home was a new experience for me that I enjoyed very much.

October 20, 2020 - Colorfully painted minibuses wait for passengers at a bus station in downtown Dakar. Most of the Car Rapides, as these buses are called in Senegal, do not have closed windows; air can circulate inside the buses, greatly reducing the risk of contracting Covid-19. Some experts also believe that heat is harmful to Covid-19 and that this may be one of the reasons the virus is spreading less effectively on the African continent. Others argue against this theory because there are countries with hot climates where infection rates are very high. However, unlike developed countries with hot climates, such as in Asia, there is hardly any air conditioning in public transportation, buildings, offices or restaurants in Senegal and in other comparable African countries.

January 16, 2021 ñ Abdou Ndaye stands at the Soubmedioun beach in Dakar. After he had to give up his job as a cab driver because of the curfews imposed because of the Covid-19 pandemic, he is determined to risk the crossing to Europe in a fishing boat. Addou dreams of being able to send money to his parents and friends. From the beach where he stands, fishing boats often set sail at night to bring migrants from Senegal to the coast of Spain. The crossing is expensive and very risky, as the relatively small fishing boats can capsize or suffer engine failure on the high seas. After very few people have taken the risk of crossing the Atlantic in a fishing boat in recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of refugee boats setting sail from the Soubmedioun beach since the beginning of the pandemic.

After quite a long Instagram break, I'm back with a photo story that explores the question of why the predicted Covid-19 catastrophe in Africa failed to happen and what the consequences of the pandemic were for the people there. I observed the situation in Senegal between October 2020 to January 2021. In the following week I will post 15 pictures from the series here. The pictures for this story were taken on assignment for GEO and Die Zeit.

Children play on fishing boats on the beach of Yarakh in Dakar. These so called Pyrogues correspond in type, painting and size to the boats that are often used by human traffickers for the dangerous crossing to Europe. Usually the crossing is sayed to take four to five days under good weather conditions and costs between 450 to 15000 Euros and more.

Hassane Diagne poses for a group photo with his exteded family at his home in Yoff, a quarter in Fakar, Senegal. He owns a small store from where money transfers can be made or received from providers such as Western Union, Ria or Orange Money. Hassane supports his extended family of about 20 people with his income from the store. In the future, he would like to invest in the development of nursing homes, as there are only a few of these in Senegal so far.
