• Waldkauz — Tawny Owl•

Some of my favourite wildlife encounters happen when I’m actually looking for something else.

Earlier this spring, I spent the mornings searching the forests near my home for fox dens. One morning, I stumbled across something I had never photographed before: Perched quietly in a beech tree only a few metres from the path sat a tawny owl.

At first, it seemed completely unaware of my presence, sleeping peacefully in the morning sun. Only when a deer moved through the forest did it slowly open its eyes and scan the woods around it. For another fifteen minutes, it remained exactly where it was before silently disappearing into the forest.

I’ve often heard tawny owls calling at night from my bedroom window, but seeing one in daylight is a much rarer experience. Finding one so close, and having the chance to observe it for so long, felt incredibly special.

Sometimes nature rewards you when you least expect it.

• Black Grouse — Birkhuhn •

Long before sunrise, the lek is already alive.

The first black grouse arrive early dawn. At first, they are little more than shapes: A silhouette. A movement. A flash of white in the darkness.

But while the eye struggles to see, the ears have no trouble at all: Hissing, calling & the „bubbling“ sounds of displaying males can be heard from afar.

Then the first light reaches the mountain peaks behind them & colours begin to emerge. For a brief moment, the lek feels almost unreal.

• Black Grouse — Birkhuhn •

Nearly every morning in April started the same way:
Getting up at 3:45 AM, a hike through the dark & lying on the ground waiting.

By the end of the month, there were probably only five mornings I hadn’t climbed into the mountains before sunrise.

For almost five years, I had been looking for a lek where black grouse, snow-covered peaks and first light came together. This spring, it finally happened…
