After riding the Gornergrat Bahn cogwheel railway (the highest train in Europe) to a summit in the Swiss Alps for views of Monte Rosa, the Matterhorn and the Gorner Glacier, we casually hiked back to the alpine village of Zermatt. One of the charming facts about Zermatt is no cars are allowed, so it feels very quaint. National Geographic Expeditions

The “Swiss Trains and the Italian Lake District” itinerary with National Geographic Expeditions certainly lived up to its name!

We traveled along three of Switzerland’s most iconic railways - the Glacier Express, Gornergrat Bahn and Bernina Express - taking in views of glaciers, stone bridges, mountain peaks and gorgeous Swiss countryside.

From Zurich to Zermatt, Gorner Glacier to St. Moritz, and Bernina Pass to Poschiavo, we took funiculars and cogwheels and some of the highest railways in Europe.

To quote my inner Forrest Gump:

"We’ve been through every kind of [t]rain there is. Little bitty stingin' [t]rain... and big ol' fat [t]rain. [T]rain that flew in sideways. And sometimes the [t]rain even seemed to come straight up from underneath. Shoot, [we) even [t]rained at night."

Exploring the beautiful country of Switzerland with National Geographic Expeditions on the “Swiss Trains and the Italian Lake District” itinerary.

After taking three gondolas up to Glacier Paradise for views of glaciers and surrounding mountain peaks, we took a leisurely hike back down to the charming alpine village of Zermatt. Along the way, we took in views of the Matterhorn, friendly sheep, suspicious dogs and gorgeous countryside.

Travel provides an opportunity to meet and learn from a wide variety of people and cultures … and you don’t always need to leave the country for a remote destination. Sometimes these opportunities are right in our backyard.

For me, that opportunity came during a trip through Arizona and Utah with Adventures by Disney. While visiting Monument Valley, we had an evening cookout dinner of tacos on fry bread with Navajo (or Diné as they refer to themselves). These musicians and storytellers - known as the Native band Dark Sky - performed beautifully composed music and shared stories passed down from their ancestors as the sun slowly receded beyond the horizon and the campfire flickered light off of the red rocks surrounding us. I’ve never in my life had the desire to play the flute, but this experience truly challenged that.

Growing up primarily in the southeastern United States, I’d never really been exposed to Native Americans but have always been curious about their cultures, their music and their customs. Being able to witness this first hand, in such a beautiful location, was a powerful experience I will remember forever.

One particular highlight was the Desert View Watchtower. This national historic landmark was constructed in 1932 and designed to resemble an Ancestral Puebloan watchtower.

Standing 70 feet tall, not counting the thousands of feet below the rim it’s located next to, the tower provides stunning views of the canyon and the Colorado River. The tower also features a Kiva room at its lower level that includes murals of Hopi legends by Hopi artist Fred Kabotie. Kiva rooms like this were often underground and used for spiritual ceremonies and worship for Pueblo people.

•My Little (Icelandic) Pony•

While hiking around the island of Grimsey with National Geographic Expeditions and Lindblad Expeditions we came across this field of Icelandic horses sporting their summer coats.

Horses have long played a significant role in Iceland and Nordic mythology, allowing gods and other beings to travel between realms and across the sky. Odin was believed to have an eight-legged horse named Sleipnir.

These compact horses are the descendants of horses brought to Iceland by Viking settlers almost 1,200 years ago, and their bloodline remains relatively untouched given the remote location of Iceland and strict rules around livestock - once a horse leaves Iceland, it cannot be brought back to help prevent the spread of diseases.

While close in size to ponies, their weight, bone structure and ability to carry larger loads classifies them as horses. And because they have no natural predators in Iceland, they’re fairly social.
