Cerro Torre? Well, almost!

I had such a fantastic time in London at the 2026 Sony World Photography Awards. It was an honor and a pleasure to meet all these inspiring photographers and see their work.

But getting much sleep was out of the question. My photographer friend .photography convinced me to shoot cityscapes instead of mountain landscapes for a change. We figured we should seize the opportunity while visiting this impressive metropolis. So we set out at 4:30 a.m. into the city, which was deserted at that hour, and searched for beautiful subjects, reflections, and moods. It was a wonderful experience to capture these architectural masterpieces in photos and to marvel at these massive structures.

A thousand thanks again to the entire .schweiz team for the invitation and for bringing your community together and making everyone happy with so much passion and dedication. That’s not something to be taken for granted, and you’re doing so much good for people and fostering a tremendous sense of community!

I recently went for an evening hike to this idyllic mountain lake because I wanted to take a night photo. However, the evening was so beautiful that, in the end, I only took a time-lapse of the Orion constellation setting and simply enjoyed the show without a tracker or any tedious work.

This mountain lake surprises me every time. I visit it very often, since I can get there quickly even after work.

This time, everything was a little different. Normally, snowdrops are blooming there at this time of year. But there was plenty of fresh snow. I was really glad I’d brought my snowshoes anyway, because in some places the snow was almost a meter deep. A little later, my colleague arrived, and we hoped the clouds would clear. About two hours later, the show began: the clouds thinned out a bit, and the light of the full moon kept illuminating different spots in the mountain valley. It looked like a spotlight, dancing across the landscape. What an amazing experience in this beautiful place!

At the end, you’ll see a short timelapse of it.

Impressions from last weekend. I’ve been visiting this mountain lake a lot lately. I’m always on the lookout for a great shot, but above all, for some peace and quiet. In winter, you’re often alone there, and this lake is one of my favorite places to relax.

Which version do you like better? The reflection or the one with the ice in the foreground?

Our home galaxy reflected in a mountain lake.

These photos were taken a few years ago. Back then, I often combined a blue hour shot of the landscape with the nighttime photos of the Milky Way. I did this to achieve high-quality landscapes free of image noise and hot pixels. Nowadays, however, I prefer to photograph everything entirely at night and use only the nighttime shots during editing. There are exceptions, though. Specifically, for images where I have to do a lot of focus stacking and am very close to the object in the foreground with the lens. It’s impossible to capture such images with full depth of field at f/14 and keep them sharp at night.

These images here are pure night shots. It may be that they lose a bit of their “wow” factor as a result, because the light on the mountains is often more special and high-contrast at twilight than at night. Additionally, at night, distracting light pollution can illuminate the mountains. But: it simply reflects reality.

What do you think? Blue hour composites or pure night photos?

I’m already looking forward to spring in the mountains and to summer. When the little ponds and mountain lakes thaw out again and reflect the mountains. When you can once again go stargazing high up in the Alps in just a T-shirt.

I have never really looked into lunar photography and planning. Until now, my moon pictures have always been taken by chance. But I am always amazed when someone posts a picture here that has been carefully planned and perfectly executed in reality. If I ever get a suitable lens for it, I can imagine really getting into this topic. Our satellite fascinates me incredibly and probably has a greater influence on us than many would think possible.
