What changed 10 years after the Gotthard tunnel? 🇨🇭🚆

Since 2016, the Gotthard Base Tunnel has become one of Europe's most important rail links. Stretching 57 kilometres beneath the Alps, it helps connect Northern and Southern Europe through a faster and more efficient transport corridor.

Designed for long-term performance, the tunnel supports both passenger and freight traffic while providing reliable operations throughout the year. By creating a flat route through the Alps, it has reduced travel times, improved efficiency and strengthened rail transport across the continent.

Ten years after its inauguration, hundreds of trains continue to pass through the tunnel every day. Often invisible to travellers, it has become an essential part of Europe's transport network.

Yes, Swiss voters approved the world's longest rail tunnel. 🇨🇭🚆

When we think of major infrastructure projects, we often imagine decisions made by governments and engineers.

In Switzerland, citizens had a direct say.

🗳️ A national decision

On 27 September 1992, Swiss voters approved the New Rail Link through the Alps (NRLA). Around 64% voted in favour.

The decision gave the green light to the Gotthard and Lötschberg base tunnels, reshaping transport across the Alps.

🏛️ Democracy takes time

The story of the Gotthard Base Tunnel spans more than three decades.

From 1980 to 2016, the tunnel's route and financing were debated and decided through a democratic political process.

That long process had one advantage: the project became deeply anchored across regions and political parties.

🤝 Built with public legitimacy

The Gotthard Base Tunnel was not imposed from above.

It is the result of national votes, parliamentary decisions and decades of public debate.

A 57 km railway tunnel under the Alps, approved and supported by citizens.

In Switzerland, projects of this scale require democratic consent.

💬 Could a project like this be decided by voters in your country?

How do you build a 57 km tunnel through the Alps? 🇨🇭⛰️

The Gotthard Base Tunnel stretches 57 km beneath the Alps, making it the world's longest railway tunnel. Its construction required nearly two decades of planning and ex*****on, mobilising major financial, technical and human resources.

Workers faced challenging geological conditions deep underground, where temperatures reached around 28°C and humidity levels approached 80%. At peak construction, more than 2,000 people were working simultaneously on the project.

The tunnel consists of two parallel tubes connected every 325 metres, ensuring safety, reliability and efficient operations.

Today, the Gotthard Base Tunnel is regarded as one of Europe's most significant engineering achievements and continues to influence infrastructure projects around the world.

Why is the Gotthard tunnel so important for Europe? 🇨🇭🚆

The Gotthard Base Tunnel is part of one of Europe’s main transport corridors, linking Northern and Southern Europe across the Alps.

Built at low altitude beneath the mountains, the tunnel allows trains to operate more efficiently by avoiding steep gradients and sharp curves. This improves reliability while reducing energy consumption for both freight and passenger transport.

The infrastructure also plays a central role in Switzerland’s strategy to shift freight from road to rail, helping reduce truck traffic while supporting more sustainable logistics across Europe.

Today, the Gotthard Base Tunnel has become a key element of European connectivity and cross-border mobility.

Why Switzerland keeps crossing the Alps 🇨🇭🏔️

Switzerland lies at the crossroads of Europe, yet much of its territory is covered by mountains. For centuries, the Alps have been both a natural barrier and a strategic passage connecting northern and southern Europe.

Long before modern tunnels, routes such as the Gotthard Pass played a central role in trade and travel across the continent. In 1882, the first Gotthard railway tunnel transformed mobility by allowing trains to pass through the Alps rather than over them, making transport faster, safer and more reliable.

Today, projects such as the 57-kilometre Gotthard Base Tunnel continue this long history of connectivity. From mountain passes to world-record rail tunnels, the objective remains unchanged: connecting Europe across the Alps.
