near.takeover - introducing new members! 💙
Mathilde Widmann

In Cairo, conversations often revealed how a place can inspire deep attachment yet also become a source of strain. The city’s modernization drive — uprooting trees, leveling neighborhoods, rewriting heritage in concrete — deepens inequality and erodes the commons. In response, some turn to quiet acts of resistance such as mapping trees, documenting heritage or engaging in climate activism. In a city where overt dissent is stifled, even photographing a building or marking a tree can become an act of defiance.

Developed during a six-month residency with CVC/SKK and Ville de Lausanne (), Unrested Ground, Echoing Dust documents Cairo’s rapid transformation and the quiet resistance preserving nature and heritage.

The series will be shown at the Alt+1000 Festival (), opening September 13. Come say hi!

near.takeover - introducing new members! 💙

Hi, I’m Mathilde Widmann (), happy new near. member, and I am doing this week’s takeover.

Over the next four days, I’ll be sharing images from different projects.

I dedicate myself to documentary photography, focusing on sensitive approaches with an acute interest in portraiture and a preference for a field-based practice involving long-term immersion — whether spending two years visiting army barracks or completing a six-monthresidency in Cairo.

Usually working with field notes and conducting interviews with the people I photograph, I aim for an approach that engages the senses. I am interested in the relationship between people and their environment, as well as their inner worlds.

💥 Saturday, September 6th — 11:30-13:00

Panel discussion between photographers, designers and publishers who make photobooks.
💡Do Photobooks still sell? Why do we need a publisher? How can we find money? Why do we need a designer who understands photography and not just design? What is a Dummy for? Why is it a collaborative process? Why does it take so long to make a book? Why do Photographers need a photobook today?
The future of Photobooks?

Nicolas Polli (designer, publisher, photographer) Bienne
Nathalie Bissig (near member, photographer) Zurich / Uri

near.takeover - introducing new members! 💙
Samuel Spreyz

On the occasion of , I’m taking over with a focus on “MSM.Rx”, my diploma project created within the framework of .

Yes, tenderness exists between hypermasculine men. Some of the men I depict often perform masculinity in an exaggerated way.

Yet, this is not toxic masculinity, even if it may come across that way at first glance. These butch beefcakes can show
tenderness between each other and by using prevention tools, taking care of one another. “MSM.Rx” is all about representing them with sensitivity, empathy, and ethical consideration.

A backroom, to me, is an industrial apparatus for s*xuality. These cold, impersonal structures that some of us use for our pleasure are also safe spaces. Etiquette and consent are crucial here. I photographed backrooms with the utmost respect for everyone’s privacy, that’s why I used filters, blur, and the absence of visible users to compose my images. These are not formalist strategies, but strategies of care.

On the occasion of , I’m taking over with a focus on “MSM.Rx”, my diploma project created within the framework of .

Partying is freedom, but staying healthy is essential. PrEP is more than just taking a pill; it’s about regular screening and check-ups. Sexual health is more than taking care of ourselves; it’s about being considerate: talking openly about prevention and checking in with each other.

“MSM.Rx” is about raising awareness of these prevention protocols (because we are all involved with prevention and safe s*x!) while keeping our spirit of questioning alive.

near.takeover - introducing new members! 💙
Samuel Spreyz

On the occasion of , I’m taking over with a focus on «MSM.Rx», my diploma project created within the framework of . Partying under surveillance. In 1969, q***r people at Stonewall, led by trans activist Marsha P. Johnson, fought back against police repression. Celebration was, and still is, political.
With these images, I want to share my feeling of freedom, dancing bare-chested in a sea of men.
Today, the surveillance is no longer, at least for now, police batons at the door, but rather the quiet gaze of medical apparatus. It feels paradoxical: taking care of ourselves and each other is a form of freedom, but also a form of control, as we become long-term patients, watched, measured, monitored.
