Protecting girls' rights is not just for one day.
It's also about the choices we make every day when telling their stories.

This is Silvia (a fictitious name), photographed by Wara Vargas at SEPAMOS in El Alto, Bolivia.

Wara Vargas, our visual creator, used her creativity to tell the children's stories while protecting their identities because protecting someone's identity doesn't mean erasing the person. It can mean finding another way to tell their story, one that respects their privacy, dignity and safety.

Look at this photo.

What makes a child feel like they belong?

A ball in the air, a hoop above them, and hands reaching from every direction.

At first, it’s just a game, but look a little closer.

Belonging starts with having a place in the game, and sometimes, that game becomes the place where different stories meet.

For a moment, different stories come together, each person brings their own experiences, their own journey, and their own reason for being there. Yet in this frame, they share the same game, the same space, and the same moment.

And maybe that's what makes a photograph more than just what we see in it.

Behind the faces, the hands, and the movement, there are stories we can't see from the frame alone.

What do we really see when we look at a photograph?

We see Rachel, a mother of seven, standing in Tillabéri, Niger. But we don't see everything.
We don't see the times her children have suffered from malnutrition. We don't see the daily challenge of finding enough food for her family or the wider reality of living in a region affected by insecurity. We only see one moment.

The rest comes from listening, understanding the context, and giving people the space to tell their own stories.
That is why ethical storytelling matters, because behind every image is a person whose story is bigger than a single frame.

On Lake Kivu, the people in front of the camera are part of the story too.

The experience became a reminder that responsible photography starts long before the photograph is taken.

“Consent is the conversation you have before you ever raise your camera.”

For people working in the field, consent is not simply about collecting a signature. It’s about creating a clear, informed process where people understand what they are agreeing to and have the space to make their own choice.

We’re glad to share 's story and her reflections on the role consent plays in building trust with the people we photograph.

The people who know a story best are often the people who live it.

That's why we work with local photographers and visual creators who bring more than technical skill. They bring cultural understanding, local context, and trusted relationships that make ethical storytelling possible.

When those creators are equipped with the right tools to ensure informed consent, the result isn't just better photography. It's a better experience for everyone in front of the camera.

But Community-Led Storytelling invites us to look beyond the final story because sometimes the most meaningful impact isn't in what's published; it's in what remains.

The trust built through the process, the confidence to speak up, and the relationships that continue long after the project ends.
The sense of ownership that comes from helping shape, not just appear in, a story.

In Rwanda, that's exactly what stayed behind: a filmmaking project whose young participants didn't just get watched; they changed how their community responded.

That's the idea at the heart of Beyond Representation: the value of a story isn't only in what it shows. It's also in what it leaves behind.
That's what Community-Led Storytelling is built for: not just stories people remember, but stories with enough trust behind them to hold real change.

Some days you build software. Some days you get a reminder of why.

Every consent form represents a person who said yes to being seen, to being heard, to having their story shared. That trust matters and deserves to be treated with care, not lost in a drawer of papers.

Behind every statistic is a lived experience

Reports and data help us understand what happened, but they rarely help us understand why it matters.
During the Visualizing Peace project in Rwanda, young people didn't have someone speak on their behalf.

Through Community-Led Storytelling (CLS), they shared their own lived experiences directly with policymakers.

The result?
Decision-makers weren't only responding to statistics; they were responding to lived experience because community-led storytelling doesn't replace evidence; it makes evidence more human.

Same camera. Different hands.

During a participatory photography project in South Sudan, the camera stayed the same; what changed was who held it.
Local participants documented their own communities, revealing perspectives, experiences, and knowledge that an outsider could never have uncovered.

That experience reshaped Tom Martin's understanding of storytelling and became the foundation of what we now call Community-Led Storytelling (CLS), an approach where communities don't just participate in telling stories; they help shape them from their own perspective.

Because CLS isn't simply about handing over a camera, It's about shifting ownership of the storytelling process.

When communities shape their own narratives, they reveal knowledge that would otherwise remain unseen.
Changing who tells the story changes what the story can reveal.
