What happens when dance leaves the stage and moves onto a vertical wall?

Photographer and lighting specialist Urs Recher takes us behind the scenes of a striking shoot at the Théâtre du Jura in Delémont, Switzerland, where dancers Laetitia Kohler and Rebekka Gather perform suspended high above the ground.

Working in intense midday sunlight and extreme backlighting, Urs combines a Para 222 with P45 and P65 reflectors and battery-powered Satos and Stelos systems to sculpt the dancers from the wall without unwanted shadows.

The result is a series of images that capture both the physical daring of the performance and its sense of weightlessness – while offering a fascinating look at the lighting decisions and technical precision behind the photographs.

Simple materials. Complex results.

This is a great example of how experimentation and problem-solving often lead to the most interesting images. Built from a stack of modified plastic champagne glasses mounted on a drill, the spinning rig created the layered ribbons and droplets that give the illusion of chocolate suspended in mid-air. The "chocolate" itself was actually carefully mixed children's paint, chosen for its flow and glossy finish.

The final image was created through a combination of high-speed flash, precise lighting, and multiple captures composited together – refining the shape and structure until everything came together.

The power of a single light source.

This watch photograph was created with a minimal, controlled lighting setup: one overhead broncolor Senso 2400 J paired with a 150 Octabox 150 cm (4.9'). The goal was to create soft yet precise illumination, revealing the volume, textures, and materiality of the watch.

A black card positioned behind the object adds depth and allows the bracelets in the background to disappear naturally, creating visual continuity beyond the frame. A white reflector placed beside the dial introduces a subtle light edge, defining the form and enhancing the details.

How can I freeze fast-moving liquid splashes in a photograph?

The key isn't your camera's shutter speed — it's your flash duration. A short flash duration acts as the actual "shutter" that freezes motion, since the flash burst itself is faster than any moving liquid or splash. broncolor Scoro packs can deliver flash durations as short as roughly 1/10,000th of a second, fast enough to freeze even rapidly spinning or splashing liquids with crisp, sharp detail.
